Jobs Market Convalescence Could Take a Long Time

The U.S. jobs market may finally be on the verge of an actual recovery, but expect it to come back with a whimper rather than a bang. The Labor Department today said the number of people who filed for unemployment insurance last week was just 368,000. That's the lowest number of weekly jobless claims reported by the government since May 2008, before the full force of the financial crisis slammed into the American economy, and it marks a drop of 20,000 from the previous week's total. Bernanke Warns High Oil Prices Could Threaten Economy

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Tuesday that a prolonged rise in oil prices would pose a danger to the economy. But he said a more likely outcome is a temporary and modest increase in consumer prices - not runaway inflation. Bernanke, in prepared testimony to the Senate Banking Committee, expressed confidence that economic growth would increase this year. But he warned it won't be strong enough to quickly lower unemployment, now at 9 percent. He also cited other risks to the economy, including rising prices for oil, gasoline, food and other commodities, and ...

From Farming to Fashion, Inflation Looks to Be on Its Way

The food on your plate, the gas in your tank, the plastic in your children's toys and the clothing on their backs are likely to get more expensive in the coming months in a spurt of inflation that could play havoc with the economic recovery. Consumers haven't yet felt many cost increases in their daily and weekly lives, thanks to companies' skittishness when it comes to raising prices amid widespread unemployment, but evidence is growing that inflation is working its way to store shelves and Americans' wallets. The Labor Department today said that wholesale prices for finished goods rose 0.8 ...

RockTenn Buys Smurfit-Stone: 3 Good Things About the $3.5 Billion Deal

All of a sudden, people are excited about cardboard boxes. On Sunday, paper and packaging company RockTenn Co. said it would acquire rival Smurfit-Stone for $3.5 billion in cash and stock, a deal that will create the second-largest container-board company in North America. Its combined annual sales will total $9 billion after the acquisition closes in the second quarter of this year. The companies have not released specific information about the impact on employees and operations, and although corporate takeovers often involve bad news for some workers, today there's a lot of positive ...

Americans Expect an Economically Rosier 2011 for the Country

Americans Expect an Economically Rosier 2011 for the Country

If 2010 was the year the economic recovery fizzled, 2011 may be when the economy finally picks up. That's the view of a majority of Americans, according to the latest poll on economic outlooks from Gallup. It finds a greater amount of optimism among people who earn more, live in the East or Midwest, and consider themselves Democrats. But poll respondents were less optimistic about their own situations in the coming year, suggesting perceptions of what's happening to the country as a whole are playing a big role. "At least some part of Americans' optimism about 2011 is based on their general ...

Obama: Problems of 2011 Will Require Bipartisanship

A bloody political year behind him, President Barack Obama kicked off 2011 today with a call for Republicans and Democrats in a newly divided Congress to work together to bolster an economy still on shaky ground. "At the start of 2011, we're still just emerging from a once-in-a-lifetime recession that's taken a terrible toll on millions of families. We all have friends and neighbors trying to get their lives back on track," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "In a few days, a new Congress will form, with one house controlled by Democrats, and one house controlled by ...

Jobless Rate Rises to 9.8 Percent as Job Growth Slows

WASHINGTON (Dec. 3) - The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 9.8 percent in November, a seven-month high, as hiring slowed. Employers added only 39,000 jobs last month, a sharp decline from the 172,000 created in October, the Labor Department reported Friday. The weakness was widespread. Retailers, factories, construction companies, financial firms and the government all cut jobs last month. Many economists were predicting the addition of 150,000 jobs. The economy has recently flashed signs of gaining momentum with busier factories, rising auto sales and a good start to the holiday ...
