Ford Focus, Electric Version, Unveiled at CES [VIDEO]

Ford is all charged up. The Ford Motor Co. revealed its first all-electric vehicle, the Focus Electric, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. Although many of the specifics are not yet public, the company did emphasize that the Focus Electric's charging time will be just half that of competing electric vehicles. Still, because the concept remains in its early stages, Ford CEO Alan Mulally anticipates challenges involving cost and charging infrastructure. "The cost of batteries for the all-electrics and the size and the charging requirements are going to be relatively limited ...

Study: Electric Cars Face Uphill Battle

(Oct. 28) -- Environmentalists and auto manufacturers alike are banking on electric cars as the next big thing in personal mobility. But in order for that to happen, people are going to have to buy them, and a new study suggests that will be the biggest stumbling block in building the transportation of the future. A study published Wednesday by auto industry analyst JD Power and Associates says that electric cars have been "overhyped" and may be heading for sluggish sales for more than a decade. Auto Critics Getting Charged Up for Chevy Volt

(Oct. 11) -- The Volt, Chevrolet's new quasi-electric car, doesn't go into production until Nov. 11. But some select journalists got a chance to test-drive the car early, and the first reviews are starting to crop up. The consensus seems to be that it works. The Volt is technically a hybrid, but unlike other hybrids, it can run for about 40 miles on an all-electric, rechargeable motor. But unlike, say, the Nissan Leaf, it also has a gasoline engine. It's being touted as a transition vehicle that can be practical for the commuter without being crippling for longer trips. The cost of the car ...

Greener Machines From Honda, Toyota et al: This Year's Top 5 Hybrids

(July 23) -- A Michigan husband and wife, Yu Qin and Shanshan Du, were arrested this week and charged with stealing information on hybrid cars from General Motors for a Chinese auto company. They've pleaded not guilty, but if convicted they could pay a steep price: up to 20 years in prison. Why is hybrid automotive technology such a hot commodity? For starters, hybrid cars are in demand because they aren't gas-guzzlers, and therefore save their owners on gas money. They also run on electricity, which is better for the environment. Automakers were quick to seize on this opportunity. For ...

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

Several trends point to the beginning of the end of car culture in the United States. But are Americans seriously ready to embrace alternatives to automobiles? It's been a bad few years for cars in America. First, there was the auto industry bailout to the tune of $110 billion. Then, two of the three big carmakers -- GM and Chrysler -- went through bankruptcy. Finally, just when we thought that the future lay in turning Japanese, even the beloved Prius went off the road (literally) and Toyota has recalled nearly 9 million of its vehicles in the last few months. ...
