Low Levels of Radiation Found in West Coast Milk

WASHINGTON -- Low levels of radiation have turned up in milk samples from two West Coast states. Traces of radioactive Iodine-131 were found in milk in California and Washington, according to federal and state authorities who are monitoring for contamination as the nuclear crisis unfolds in Japan. But the officials say the levels are still 5,000 times below levels of concern. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that radiation was found in a March 25 milk sample from Spokane, Wash. The California Department of Public Health said on its ...

Feds Deploy More Radiation Monitors in Western US

SAN FRANCISCO -- Growing concern by Americans over exposure from damaged nuclear plants in Japan has prompted officials to deploy more radiation monitors in the western United States and Pacific territories, federal environmental regulators say. Officials with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said they do not expect harmful radiation levels to reach anywhere in the U.S. from Japan. "The agency decided out of an abundance of caution to send these deployable monitors in order to get some monitors on the ground closer to Japan," Jonathan Edwards, director of the U.S. Environmental ...

Opinion: Why Aren't Environmentalists Cheering Higher Gas Prices?

As gasoline prices continue to rise faster than station owners can update their signs, so too have calls to do something about the problem. Some Democrats are calling on President Barack Obama to uncork the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help ameliorate the pain at the pump. Republicans are renewing calls for more domestic oil production, including offshore. So where are environmental groups? Sure, they're talking about the need for new, clean energy supplies, but often in the context of how that will help lower gasoline prices. But why aren't they out there cheering on high gasoline ...

Five Budget Cuts That Could Be Harmful to Your Health

Hard-fought-for laws and regulations to save lives and the environment will be gutted or eliminated in budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives or ordered by President Barack Obama's team, experts say. Public health and environmental experts say it's indisputable that lives will be lost if these cuts are made: 1) The Consumer Product Safety Commission. The commission is scheduled next week to roll out its long-awaited public database on the safety of consumer products. For the first time, it will allow shoppers to quickly determine whether products they ...

Obama Pushes Effort to Protect Public Lands

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says a new administration effort to protect public lands will put people back to work in tourism and recreation and help Americans stay healthier by encouraging outdoor activities. The initiative largely incorporates existing programs under a new name, "America's Great Outdoors." Still, it aims to double federal spending on land and water conservation to $900 million. The money would be used to buy private land for public use and provide grants to states. Obama said it is important to conserve public lands, even in tough economic times, and that the new ...

Obama Administration Boosts Price Tag on Human Life

How much is your life worth? The government has an answer -- actually, several answers -- for that. As The New York Times reports, federal agencies trying to remake the government's vast regulatory system are "grappling with a subject that is more the province of poets and philosophers than bureaucrats: What is the value of a human life?" Bill Pugliano, Getty Images Federal agencies, such as the Transportation Department, put a value on human life to determine how much to spend to prevent a single death. The government needs to know so it can determine how much it should spend to ...

DHS, Interior Among 5 of the Worst-Run Federal Programs

WASHINGTON -- The Government Accountability Office released its biennial list of the poorest performing government agencies today -- and this year, the Interior Department's management of the nation's oil and gas resources made the list for the first time. This should come as no surprise, given the breathtaking scope of the lapses by the Minerals Management Service that came to light during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The transgressions, catalogued by Interior's inspector general, included gifts, trips and football tickets given to inspectors, who sometimes let oil and gas companies fill in ...

Toxic Chemicals in Drinking Water Will Have to Meet New EPA Standards

The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced plans to set standards for perchlorate and 16 other toxic chemicals found in drinking water supplies. The new regulations include a proposal to establish the first-ever national standard for perchlorate, a naturally occurring and man-made chemical found in rocket fuels that has been linked to thyroid problems. Perchlorate has contaminated water supplies in at least 26 states, according to the EPA. The decision to set new perchlorate rules reverses a Bush administration finding that a national standard for the chemical was ...

EPA Will Regulate Greenhouse Gases in Texas, Court Rules

A federal court has shot down a bid by Texas to keep the Obama administration from regulating greenhouse gases in the Lone Star State. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled Wednesday that the Environmental Protection Agency can take over the permitting of carbon dioxide emissions in Texas, Politico reported. It was the third time in two months that the request by Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott was rejected in court. In December, the appeals panel agreed to stay federal enforcement regulations temporarily. That halt was lifted ...
