Tom Corbett Budget: 5 Painful Cuts in Pennsylvania

Next in line for a leaner, meaner budget: Pennsylvania. Republican Gov. Tom Corbett just unveiled his 2011-12 budget proposal for the commonwealth, and sure enough, the $27.3 billion plan contains a number of steep cuts. For the past two years, Pennsylvania has benefited from a $2.6 billion federal stimulus package; that money runs out in June, and the commonwealth is grappling with a $4 billion deficit. The proposed budget "resets Pennsylvania's fiscal clock to 2008-2009 levels," The Morning Call reports. And while it's largely in keeping with current conservative thinking about state ...

Five Budget Cuts That Could Be Harmful to Your Health

Hard-fought-for laws and regulations to save lives and the environment will be gutted or eliminated in budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives or ordered by President Barack Obama's team, experts say. Public health and environmental experts say it's indisputable that lives will be lost if these cuts are made: 1) The Consumer Product Safety Commission. The commission is scheduled next week to roll out its long-awaited public database on the safety of consumer products. For the first time, it will allow shoppers to quickly determine whether products they ...

Toxic Chemicals in Drinking Water Will Have to Meet New EPA Standards

The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced plans to set standards for perchlorate and 16 other toxic chemicals found in drinking water supplies. The new regulations include a proposal to establish the first-ever national standard for perchlorate, a naturally occurring and man-made chemical found in rocket fuels that has been linked to thyroid problems. Perchlorate has contaminated water supplies in at least 26 states, according to the EPA. The decision to set new perchlorate rules reverses a Bush administration finding that a national standard for the chemical was ...

Six Things You Probably Didn't Know About the Oil Spill

WASHINGTON -- Of the tens of thousands of people who worked to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, many had competing loyalties and agendas. Unified, they were not. Complicating matters, local, state and federal officials felt enormous pressure to avoid being seen as in cahoots with BP. Because the federal government's response was slow off the mark, President Barack Obama got much of the blame. In the Oil Spill Commission's final report, the following excerpts from "Chapter Five: Response and Containment," give a first look at some of what went on behind the scenes: 1. The Myth of ...

Dioxin: 4 Questions Answered About the Toxic Compound Wreaking Havoc in Germany

Before you take your next bite of food, you may want to read this article. After toxic dioxin was found to have contaminated German poultry and pigs, a crisis has ensued for that country's farmers. Nearly 5,000 farms have been shut down, and countries around the globe are refusing to accept German food products. As AOL News' Dana Kennedy reported today, the source of the dioxin is believed to be a German company that is said to have supplied tainted fatty acid to animal feed makers. Surge Desk takes a look at what is considered to be one of the most toxic chemicals ever created by ...

Opinion: The Hidden Risk of Fire Safety Standards

In December, news broke that scientists at the University of Texas School of Public Health found extremely high levels of a class of recently banned flame retardants, PBDEs, in brand-name butter. This adds fuel to the long standing -- and fiery -- controversy about the use of flame retardants in consumer products. Certainly the argument for fire safety is a strong one. However, on the other side of the debate there are a growing number of scientists who are increasingly concerned about the specific chemicals used as flame retardants -- the PBDEs and now their replacements -- pumped into ...

EPA Announces New Greenhouse Gas Regulations

Calling it a "common-sense approach" towards curbing greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced new regulations on emissions from power plants and oil refineries as a way to fight global warming. In a statement on the EPA's website late Thursday, administrator Lisa Jackson said the rules targeting "the largest industrial pollution sources" would go into effect next year under the Clean Air Act. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG [greenhouse gas] pollution that threatens the health and welfare of ...

EPA Moves Unilaterally to Curb Greenhouse Gases

WASHINGTON - Stymied in Congress, the Obama administration is moving unilaterally to clamp down on power plant and oil refinery greenhouse emissions, announcing plans for developing new standards over the next year. In a statement posted on the agency's website late Thursday, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson said the aim was to better cope with pollution contributing to climate change. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution that threatens the health and welfare of Americans," Jackson said in a ...

Risky Business: EPA Builds List of Potentially Dangerous Chemicals

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- As the rates of learning disabilities, autism and related conditions rise, the Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to release a roster of the pollutants likely to contribute to these or other neurological disorders. In an ongoing, three-year effort, an EPA team has determined which developmental neurotoxicants -- chemicals that damage a fetal and infant brain -- may pose the biggest risk to the American public. Some compounds on the EPA's list are ubiquitous in household products, drinking water, medicine, and within the environment. They range from ...
