Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It's still early, but Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake appears poised to win the GOP nomination to replace retiring Sen. John Kyl. He has already been endorsed by The Club for Growth and RedState's Erick Erickson, and the most likely conservative competitor -- former Rep. John Shadegg -- has declined to run. But while many conservatives are excited about Flake, some social conservatives are less enthusiastic. For example, Mike Mears, who runs the Concerned Women for America PAC, posted this on his blog: So what's my problem with Flake? 1. He's bad on Don't Ask, Don't Tell. He obviously ...
The race to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is already shaping up in Texas. On a call with conservative bloggers Wednesday morning, former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz announced he would seek the GOP nomination for the seat. Cruz told the bloggers he was letting them hear his plans first because they will be at the "frontier" of this race. Though already shaping up to be a crowded primary field, Cruz is considered a top-tier candidate for the GOP nomination to be decided in March of 2012. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who is largely seen as a moderate who can self-fund his ...
The other day, I blogged about how conservative RedState blogger Erick Erickson disagreed with the National Review over the GOP's "Pledge to America." National Review endorsed it, while Erickson called it "dreck." Now, The Daily Caller is reporting that National Review's endorsement was already in the tank before the pledge was unveiled. As the Daily Caller reported: ... skittish rank-and-file members were reassured at a Wednesday night caucus meeting by leadership aides who distributed a National Review editorial praising the "Pledge." The National Review editorial had been prearranged, ...
When it comes to the GOP's new "Pledge to America," which will be unveiled officially Thursday morning, the venerable National Review and the popular conservative blog RedState don't quite see eye to eye. A glowing editorial on National Review says: The inevitable question will be: Is the pledge as bold as the Contract? The answer is: The pledge is bolder. The Contract with America merely promised to hold votes on popular bills that had been bottled up during decades of Democratic control of the House. The pledge commits Republicans to working toward a broad conservative agenda that, if ...
The 2010 Republican primary elections have pleasantly provided us with many examples of conservative insurgents ousting establishment insiders. But as I noted yesterday, Tuesday's GOP primary in Delaware is different. It is the first time bona fide conservatives are sharply divided over whether to support the Tea Party candidate (Christine O'Donnell) over the establishment candidate (Rep. Mike Castle). This is not to say that O'Donnell has not received her fair share of conservative support. She has been endorsed by Sarah Palin, the NRA, and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), for example. ...
News that conservative columnist Ann Coulter would speak at "HomoCon 2010," an event organized by the conservative gay group GOProud, prompted conservative outlet WorldNetDaily to drop her from speaking at one of its upcoming events. Coulter defended her decision to accept the invitation, saying, "They hired me to give a speech, so I'm giving a speech. . . . I speak to a lot of groups and do not endorse them. I speak at Harvard and I certainly don't endorse their views." But while she may have lost a WND speaking gig over it, most young conservatives I spoke to defended Coulter's ...
The Washington Post's Greg Sargent got a big exclusive today regarding the latest controversy surrounding Kentucky U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul. As Sargent blogged, The woman who sparked a national firestorm by recounting Rand Paul's youthful indiscretions to GQ magazine is now clarifying her account: She says she was not kidnapped nor forced to do drugs by Paul. ... The woman -- who was made available to me for an interview by GQ reporter Jason Zengerle in response to the Paul campaign's denunciations of his article -- said she didn't mean to imply that she was kidnapped "in a legal ...
(July 22) -- A number of high-profile conservatives are speaking out against the ousting of U.S. Department of Agriculture official Shirley Sherrod. Sherrod's resignation was announced on Tuesday after conservative pundit Andrew Breitbart posted an edited video of her speaking at an NAACP banquet in 1986. In the video, Sherrod, who is black, admits to not doing everything she could to help a white farmer. The NAACP quickly denounced Sherrod's words, calling them "shameful" and appalling. In a statement reporting her resignation, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said, "There is zero tolerance ...
The controversy over USDA official Shirley Sherrod has taken a surprising turn. Not only has the Georgia farmer she allegedly discriminated against come to her defense, but a few prominent conservative and liberal opinion leaders have united in saying she was unjustly ousted based on a selectively edited video. The controversial video of a speech she made in March to an NAACP forum showed Sherrod admitting that she withheld full help to a white farmer who was facing bankruptcy. However, it now appears the remarks may have been taken out of context. After all, the incident occurred 24 years ...
A Georgia farmer is defending against charges of racism an ousted Agriculture Department employee who helped him file for bankruptcy. The NAACP and a conservative blogger have also come to her defense. Roger Spooner told CNN he credits Shirley Sherrod, who resigned Monday as the USDA's director of rural development for Georgia, with helping his family save their farm. Spooner, who is white, said he can't understand accusations that Sherrod is racist. "I don't know what brought up the racist mess," Roger Spooner told CNN. "They just want to stir up some trouble, it sounds to me in my ...
