Report: La. First Lady's Charity Attracts Corporate Money

Major corporations involved in high-stakes issues before the Louisiana state government have made commitments of nearly $1 million to a charitable foundation set up by the wife of Gov. Bobby Jindal, The New York Times reports. Pledges to the Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana's Children include $250,000 from Marathon Oil, which last year got state approval to boost refining capacity at its facility in Louisiana, according to a review of records by the newspaper. AT&T, which pushed legislation allowing it to market its cable-TV service without negotiating with local regulators, also ...

Colorado Secretary of State Says He Needs a Part-Time Job

Conservatives often complain about highly paid government jobs, but in Colorado, the recently elected Republican secretary of state says his job doesn't pay enough. So he plans to continue working part-time for his former law firm, which specializes in elections law -- an area overseen by the secretary of state's office. Scott Gessler's decision, which he says he would have mentioned during the election had the media asked, is raising ethical concerns. The Denver Business Journal reported Friday that Gessler will work 20 hours a month -- on weekends -- for Hackstaff Law Group. Gessler was a ...

Confessions of a One-Time Ghostwriter, or How I Learned to Love Ironing Instead

I don't remember his name or how and where we met. I only recall that during my sophomore year of college, I was introduced to a guy at some weekend party who seemed way less interested in my name or my witty repartee than in my major. Journalism, I replied, with a double minor in English and Poli Sci, His gorgeous blue eyes lit up, and a series of rapid-fire questions followed. Will you write a term paper for me? Can you do footnotes? Do you own a typewriter? And can you get it to me by 10 o'clock next Friday? I'll pay you $25 for 10 pages, and don't forget to double-space it. I looked ...

The full House on Thursday will decide the punishment for Rep. Charlie Rangel's ethics violations, according to Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. The word comes as Rangel (D-N.Y.) makes an aggressive push on Capitol Hill to avoid the harsh penalty of censure for his 11 violations of House rules. ...

Big New York Insider Trading Probe Spawns Another

NEW YORK (Nov.26) -- An insider trading case last year that federal authorities said was the biggest ever is providing a recipe for another case that may be even bigger. The current case is largely an extension of work that led to the arrest of Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam in October 2009. The Galleon investigation marked the first time that federal authorities used wiretaps in an insider trading probe. Similarly, wiretaps led to the first arrest in the latest case. Don Ching Trang Chu, a consulting firm executive, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly providing private information ...

Pope OKs Condom Use In Some Cases

Pope Benedict XVI has said that in special cases, such as that of male prostitutes trying to prevent HIV infection, condoms could be justified under Catholic ethical thinking, especially if their use leads to an awareness that engaging in such a "banalization of sexuality" is morally harmful. ...

Tyler Clementi's Choice: Sex, Death and Video-Rape at Rutgers

If you try to draw a line between hate crimes and natural human behavior, you'd better have a good eraser. On Sept. 22, violinist and Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi jumped to his death after video of a (gay) sexual encounter was secretly filmed and posted on the Internet, allegedly by fellow students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. So far, Ravi and Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy, but some people are calling for hate-crime prosecution. My Woman Up colleague Mia Navarro quotes a New York Times commenter who says his students live in a technology bubble where they rarely encounter ...

Studies Suggest 'It's Complicated' When It Comes to Teens and Online Ethics

Studies Suggest 'It's Complicated' When It Comes to Teens and Online Ethics

(Sept. 21) -- The Internet is great, but it can also be a scary place, haunted by unethical teens, "cyberbullies" and, of course, insidious, anonymous online commentators. That's at least according to several recent studies indicating that even in an increasingly Web-friendly world, logging online can still be a somewhat pernicious activity. At the same time, teens' habits of sharing tons of personal information online may be paving the way for a more civil discourse. How can this be? Surge Desk has the rundown. Teens fail to consider ethics online According to an ongoing study from Harvard ...
