He is to be the second inmate killed using the surgical sedative pentobarbital as a stand-alone execution drug. All Ga. Executions On Hold After DEA Seizes Critical Drug

ATLANTA -- All Georgia executions are off after federal drug agents seized the state's supply of a sedative used in lethal injections that has been challenged by capital punishment critics and death-row inmates, including a man recently executed who called the British exporter of the drug a "fly-by-night supplier." Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Chuvalo Truesdell wouldn't say exactly why Georgia's supply of sodium thiopental was taken Tuesday, just that "we had questions about how the drug was imported to the U.S." The sedative is part of a three-drug cocktail used in executions ...

Ohio Set for Nation's First Execution Using Single Drug

LUCASVILLE, Ohio - A man convicted of killing a storeowner was to be put to death Thursday with the country's first use of the surgical sedative pentobarbital as a stand-alone execution drug. The execution of death row inmate Johnnie Baston also would mark a move to make the process more public and give inmates speedier access to attorneys in case something goes wrong when needles are being inserted into them. Ohio Department of Corrections / AP Johnnie Baston is to be executed in Ohio Thursday with a stand-alone execution drug. Ohio has had problems inserting needles in a ...

Unhappy Meal: 'Food Activists' Behead Ronald McDonald

Ronald McDonald is the victim of a crime -- and this time the Hamburglar isn't to blame. A group of artists and activists in Finland kidnapped a Ronald McDonald sculpture from a McDonald's restaurant and, despite the efforts of police, managed to behead a version of the fast-food icon in a grisly recording shot in the style of terrorist videos. Members of the so-called Food Liberation Army are believed to have kidnapped Ronald McDonald from one of the chain's Helsinki locations after presenting restaurant employees with phony documents, the Helsinki Times reports. ...

Calif. Execution Try Collapses After Court Setbacks

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 29) -- California's first execution attempt in nearly five years collapsed Wednesday amid two adverse court rulings in as many days and an impending shortage of drugs that made the lethal injection of a convicted rapist-murderer impossible. State officials called off the execution of Albert Greenwood Brown after a state Supreme Court ruling made Friday the earliest possible day that Brown could be given a lethal injection. But by then, the state's entire supply of a drug used during the process would have expired. It was unclear when the state might try again to execute ...

California Forced to Delay Executions Again

(Sept. 28) -- A man convicted of raping and murdering a girl on her way to school is being given a series of last-minute reprieves -- one because the judge allowed him to pick his own dosage of lethal injection -- from becoming the first person executed in California in almost five years. Albert Greenwood Brown, 56, was to become just the 14th person executed in California since the death penalty was re-enacted in 1977 and the first in San Quentin State Prison's new death chamber. A federal judge placed a moratorium on executions in 2006. Late Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reset the ...
