Man Pleads Guilty in Ohio Gunpoint Abortion Case

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man charged under an Ohio fetal homicide law with trying to force his pregnant girlfriend at gunpoint to get an abortion pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted murder, weapons and abduction counts. Dominic Holt-Reid pulled a gun Oct. 6 on girlfriend Yolanda Burgess, who was three months pregnant, and forced her to drive to an abortion clinic, police said. Burgess, who was 26 at the time, did not go through with the procedure but instead passed a note to a clinic employee, who called police. Prosecutors had brought their case against Holt-Reid using the state's 1996 law that ...

Family of Doctor Who Delivered Obama 'Blown Away'

HONOLULU - The family of a Honolulu doctor whose signature appears on President Barack Obama's birth certificate woke up to the news Wednesday that the late obstetrician had delivered Obama. Relatives of Dr. David Sinclair told The Associated Press that they were "blown away" and "honored." So-called "birthers" have questioned Obama's birthplace, espousing theories that he was not born in the U.S., possibly his father's native Kenya, and therefore ineligible to be president. Obama released a short form copy of his birth certificate in 2008. Recently, potential Republican presidential ...

New York Allows Same-Sex Conjugal Visits in State Prisons

New York inmates who are in same-sex marriages or civil unions are being allowed conjugal visits with their spouses or partners. The state officially announced the change in policy last week, making New York one of the few states to grant the private visits for gay and lesbian inmates in legally recognized same-sex partnerships. Although the policy will directly affect a relatively small number of people, advocates for same-sex marriage say it's an important step toward full equality for gay and lesbian couples. "This is a recognition of same-sex couples as families," Molly McKay of Marriage ...

Texas May Strip Away Transgender Marriage Rights

AUSTIN, Texas -- Two years after Texas become one of the last states to allow transgendered people to use proof of their sex change to get a marriage license, Republican lawmakers are trying to roll back the clock. Advocates for the transgendered say a proposal to bar transgendered people from getting married smacks of discrimination and would put their legally-granted marriages in danger of being nullified if challenged in court. One of the Republican sponsors of the legislation said he's simply trying to clean up the 2009 law in a state that bans same-sex marriage under the ...

Washington Teen Fakes Pregnancy as School Project

TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A high school student who faked her pregnancy for six months as a social experiment stunned a student assembly this week by taking off the belly bundle. Only a handful of people knew that 17-year-old Gaby Rodriguez wasn't really pregnant, including her mother, boyfriend and the principal, according to the Yakima Herald-Republic. They helped keep the secret from some of her siblings and her boyfriend's family and students and teachers, all as part of a senior project on stereotyping. Before the revelation, she asked several students and teachers to read quotes ...

Montana Judge Rejects Gay Couple Rights Suit

HELENA, Mont. -- A Montana judge on Thursday rejected a lawsuit that sought to extend to gay couples the same legal protections as married couples, saying in his decision that he can't grant the benefits partly because of the state's voter-approved constitutional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of the gay couples, arguing that the guarantees in the Montana Constitution of equal protection, privacy and dignity should require the state to afford the legal rights to the gay couples. The ACLU said it ...
