After studying the fats, er, facts, the FTA is proposing to change the average passenger weight from 150 to 175 pounds and the floor space occupied per standing passenger from 1.5 to 1.75 square feet. With the new year here and Americans everywhere trying to lose weight, the federal government's new dietary guidelines released today call for cutbacks in salt as well as in calories from added sugar and solid fats like butter. The guidelines, which come out every five years, tell people 51 and older, all blacks and people with hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease to cut their salt intake to 1,500 milligrams, or a little more than half a teaspoon a day. The recommendation for sodium applies to about half the U.S. population; everyone else should be limited to less than ...
Wal-Mart, the nation's largest retailer and grocery, announced today that it is continuing its push toward healthier food with a five-year program to reduce sodium, fat and sugar content in the chain's in-house brands and to encourage suppliers to do the same. First lady Michelle Obama joined Wal-Mart executives in Washington as part of her ongoing campaign to promote healthy eating. She said the announcement has "the potential to transform the marketplace and help Americans put healthier foods on their tables every single day," according to USA Today. Wal-Mart has been working for a few ...
(Dec. 1) -- Plenty of people keep cash in their billfolds. But police in Oklahoma say two women tried to steal $2,600 worth of valuables under their skin folds. Cops in Edmond arrested Ailene Brown, 28, and Shmeco Thomas, 37, on suspicion of shoplifting after the pair allegedly stuffed $2,600 worth of footwear, denim and accessories under rolls of fat on their stomachs and beneath their breasts. "These two individuals were actually concealing them in areas of their body where excess skin was, underneath their chest area and up around their armpits," Officer James Hamm told KFOR.com. The ...
(Nov. 26) -- Whoever said there's no free lunch obviously didn't have a membership to a giant discount store like Costco or Sam's Club. Every day, millions of Americans head to these places under the auspices of shopping for ginormous cans of refried beans or 24-roll packs of paper towels or 64-roll packs of toilet paper. But what they're really going for is a free lunch made up of little samples from stands in the aisles and end caps, everything from chips and guacamole to chicken nuggets shaped like Mickey Mouse to chicken Alfredo washed down a small cup of a caffeinated Tang-like ...
(Oct. 27) -- For years, nutritionists and industry officials alike have considered the merits of high-fructose corn syrup with one key fact in mind: At a chemical level, it has nearly equal levels of fructose and glucose. As it turns out, that may not be true after all. A new study published in the journal Obesity measured the amounts of different types of sugars in 23 kinds of drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. And they found that several brands contained corn syrup made up of 65 percent fructose, not 55 percent, which has been the commonly cited statistic until now. The ...
(Oct. 5) -- Logging adequate sleep might be a key component of losing unneeded fat, rather than valuable lean body mass. A small study on 10 overweight or obese adults, published in this week's Annals of Internal Medicine, suggests that diet and exercise are only part of the solution in attaining a healthy body mass and composition. Study participants were sequestered to a controlled environment for four weeks, with their meals, exercise routines and sleep schedules strictly monitored. Because self-reporting is often skewed, the approach makes the research all the more intriguing. Longer ...
(July 14) -- Sewer workers have cleared out 1,000 tons of compressed fat and trash from beneath London's Leicester Square, a tourist hot spot and venue for glitzy movie premieres. Workers clad in overalls with masks and gloves shoveled out enough gunk to fill nine of London's iconic double-decker buses, utility Thames Water said in a statement. Stewart Turkington, AFP / Getty Images A worker lifts a shovelful of fat that has collected in the sewer beneath London's Leicester Square. "We're used to getting our hands dirty, but nothing on this scale," said Danny Brackley, a sewer flusher ...
(July 13) -- Qnexa, one of three anti-obesity drugs being reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration, effectively reduces body weight among obese patients. That's the bottom line from the FDA today, ahead of a final decision in October. But the agency remains wary of Qnexa's potential side effects: The drug has been linked to anxiety, sleeping problems and depression. Of course, the downsides to Qnexa aren't stopping Vivus, the company behind it, from pushing full-steam ahead in trying to get the drug on the market. In particular, a statement from Vivus notes that the side effects of its ...
