Amy Chua wants us to talk about how Americans should be raising their children. Are we too soft? Should we be tougher? People are taking sides. But I would submit that all this talk of so-called tiger mothers has less to do with being a parent and everything to do with what it means today to be a strong successful woman. Why? Sandra Tsing Loh's article on motherhood in this month's Atlantic has kicked off quite a discussion among my colleagues, Melinda, Lynn, Delia and Lizzie, about what makes a good parent. But, if we could set aside questions of parental quality for just a moment, I want to talk about something a little easier to measure: quantity -- namely, too much parenting.
