Otherwise unassuming, even shy, she seems to turn up, front and center, for many of the cases we'll never forget. She counseled Ted Kaczynski 13 years ago this month when the Unabomber was toying with the government in advance of his guilty plea. She helped an unrepentant Eric Robert Rudolph, the Olympic Park bomber, avoid a death sentence. She was present and accountable during the chaotic trial of Susan Smith, the South Carolina mother who drowned her two small children in a car in a lake. She even represented Zacarias ...
(Nov. 1) -- The day before the critical midterm elections, the Obama administration has won its federal case to extend the freeze on the overturning of "don't ask, don't tell," which was ruled unconstitutional by another federal judge less than a month ago. What does it all mean? Under the previous ruling, the controversial policy of discharging openly gay servicemen and women was effectively arrested, with U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips twice maintaining that the military could no longer enforce it, despite an attempt by Obama administration lawyers to secure an emergency stay. The alleged confession was detailed in a court document released as nine of the 10 alleged spies arrested last week were due to appear for bail hearings. Several of the hearings were postponed and just one of the suspects -- Lazaro's wife -- was granted bail. Lazaro made a "lengthy post-arrest statement" on June 27 after waiving his Miranda rights, according to a ...
A Federal judge in Washington DC has ruled against the Bush Administration in a little noticed court case that may have far reaching implications for President Bush's legacy. At the beginning of his first term, President Bush issued an executive order that gave former presidents and vice-presidents the authority to review documents before their release. The court ruled that that portion of the order violated Federal law that gives the National Archives the final say on the release of documents. Executive Order 13233 "effectively eliminated" the National Archives' ability to decide which ...
