Fair Trade Company Improving Lives of 4,500 Women in Thailand

Measly wages and non-existent benefits have become the norm for many workers employed overseas. However, one fair trade company in Thailand is determined to raise those standards and give their employees a better, brighter way of life. Pure & Co. is a company that specializes in hand-sewn knitwear and other hand-made garments through their Pure Handknit and Neon Buddha clothing lines. The company operates globally, employing 5,000 people -- mostly women -- across Canada, the U.S. and Thailand who produce knitwear that's sold in 2,000 independent boutiques around America and in Nordstrom, ...

Remembering the Women at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941

There were women at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. No one talks about it much because there were so few of them compared to the men. Today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, also known as the "date that will live in infamy." The World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument is a national park. A new $56 million visitor's center is being dedicated this week. The highlight of the four days of events marking the occasion is a ceremony this morning at 7:30 a.m. Honolulu time, exactly 18 minutes before the 1941 attack began. Out of the 1,511 men on board the USS Arizona, 334 ...

San Francisco Considers Male Circumcision Ban

(Nov. 12) -- Fresh off their city's banning of Happy Meals, some San Francisco residents want to put a stop to another cruelty inflicted upon young children: male circumcision. "A proposed ballot measure for the November 2011 ballot -- when voters will be electing San Francisco's next mayor -- would amend The City's police code 'to make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person who has not attained the age of 18,'" The San Francisco Examiner reports. The practice is standard in the United States and has spread far beyond ...

The Sex Life of Black Truffles

The Sex Life of Black Truffles

(Nov. 1) -- Warning: Hot fungi fooling-around action below. On Sunday, I found myself at the pasta station of Manhattan's hottest new supermarket, Eataly. While ordering some fresh pasta, I couldn't help but notice nearby the white and black nuggets, nestled in straw, each bearing pricetags. $150. $250. Truffles. The fungi prized by gourmands all over the world. "Black truffles, which grow underground on the roots of oak trees, have proved notoriously difficult to cultivate," explains the Telegraph. "For years the reason has been a mystery, as has the precise method by which the fungi ...

Gawker's Christine O'Donnell 'One-Night Stand' Story Denounced by Left, Right

(Oct. 28) -- Did Gawker just cross the line, big time? The Manhattan-based gossip website published a piece today by an anonymous author who purports to have had a one-night stand with Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell on Halloween night three years ago. The piece had been something of a smash hit for Gawker, at least traffic-wise, receiving more than 180,000 page views in less than two hours, according to partner website Jezebel. But the salacious nature of the account coupled with the timing of its release (less than a week before the election) has brought about swift ...

Meghan McCain's Breasts Back in the Spotlight After O'Donnell Attack

(Oct. 18) -- The Delaware Senate race just got a whole lot, well, racier. Almost one year to the date that Meghan McCain roiled the Internet by posting a picture of herself on her Twitter page that prominently displayed her ample bosom, the 25-year-old daughter of Sen. John McCain posted a message on the microblogging site that decidedly returned the attention of her 92,000 followers to that part of her body once more. .bbpBox27772593786 {background:url(http://a1.twimg.com/profile_background_images/128421426/133672276.jpg) #000000;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px ...

29 Women Break Afghan Army's Glass Ceiling

(Sept. 23) -- Twenty-nine former housewives graduated today from the Afghan National Army's officer candidacy school, becoming their country's first female military officers in a generation. Afghan women served in the military up until the 1980s but were sidelined from the army under the strict Islamic policies of the Taliban that followed the Soviet withdrawal in 1989. Today's new female officers won't be posted on the front lines of battles against Taliban fighters but will instead take up administrative jobs, helping to lead the Afghan military into a new era once U.S. forces begin ...

Who Cares About the End of 'Cathy'?

(Aug. 12) -- Thirty-four years and thousands of neurotic moments later, the misadventures of the high-strung, long-lashed, tenacious brunette comic-strip character known as Cathy are drawing to a close. Creator Cathy Guisewite, who, yes, modeled the main character after herself, announced this week that the Oct. 3 strip would be her last. "It's just been really unbelievably agonizing to make the decision," Guisewite told The Associated Press. "The strip has not only been the most astonishing form of therapy for 34 years, but doing a daily comic strip for the newspaper set a certain rhythm ...
