Indiana Deputy Attorney General Fired Over Threatening Twitter Posts

Indiana Deputy Attorney General Jeff Cox has been fired for remarks he made on Twitter last week, suggesting riot police in Wisconsin should use live ammunition when clearing protesters out of the Wisconsin Capitol building. The tweet led to a war of words between Cox and Mother Jones magazine editor Adam Weinstein, who uncovered and wrote about similar comments on Cox's blog. The blog has since been taken down. "Civility and courtesy toward all members of the public are very important to the Indiana attorney general's office. We respect individuals' First Amendment right to express their ...

Wal-Mart Security Employees Fired for Disarming Store Gunman

Four Wal-Mart employees have been fired after management said they violated company policy by disarming an alleged shoplifter who had pulled a gun inside the store. Lori Poulsen, Justin Richins, Shawn Ray and Gabriel Stewart were all longtime workers at Wal-Mart's Layton, Utah, store. Poulsen was an asset protection coordinator, Richins and Ray were asset protection associates, and Stewart was an assistant manager. On Jan. 13, employees allegedly witnessed a man identified as Trent Allen Longton take a netbook computer out of the package and stuff it under his shirt. When Longton attempted ...

Rival Hires Car Salesman Fired for Wearing Packers Tie

A Chicago car salesman fired for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie on the job is now working for his former boss's rival dealership. John Stone, 34, said he wore the green-and-gold tie Monday to honor his late grandmother, who was a huge Packers fan. She died recently and was buried on Friday, two days before the NFC Championship game. The Packers ended up beating the hometown Chicago Bears for the NFC title. When Stone's boss Jerry Roberts saw the tie, he told him to take it off or find another job. Stone said he thought Roberts was kidding, but he wasn't. ABC News Chicago car ...

Frank Bush Out as Texans' Defense Boss, According to Reports

As expected, the Houston Texans have fired defensive coordinator Frank Bush. Bush, who oversaw the NFL's lowest-ranked pass defense and the 30th-ranked defense overall, was fired Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported. Schefter and John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported throughout last week that Bush and secondary coach David Gibbs likely would be fired following the Texans' season, which ended Sunday with a 34-17 victory at home over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gary Kubiak, who finished his fifth season as the Texans' head coach with losses in eight of the last 10 games and ...

San Fran Macy's Cans Santa for 'Naughty' Joke

(Dec. 7) -- Macy's has fired a veteran Santa Claus at one of its San Francisco stores after a couple complained that a joke he told them was inappropriate. John Toomey, 68, a popular Kris Kringle at the Union Square Macy's for the past 20 years, was told over the weekend that his services would no longer be needed because of objections from an older woman and her husband who visited him, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. "When I ask the older people who sit on my lap if they've been good and they say, 'Yes,' I say, 'Gee, that's too bad,'" Toomey told the newspaper Monday. "Then, if they ...

Conn. Woman Fights Termination: Top 5 Facebook Firings

(Nov. 10) -- Go ahead, trash your boss on Facebook. A Connecticut woman who was fired from her job as an EMT last year for criticizing her boss on the social network may set a precedent for bashing your superiors on Facebook in a "first-of-its-kind legal case," according to The Associated Press. The National Labor Relations Board says Dawnmarie Souza's negative comments and Facebook correspondences with fellow employees over grievances with their superiors fall under laws of protected speech, making Souza's termination from the American Medical Response of Connecticut Inc. unjustified. "It's ...

Keith Olbermann's Replacement Better Not Have Donated to Anyone, Ever

Keith Olbermann's Replacement Better Not Have Donated to Anyone, Ever

(Nov. 5) -- Like a bad segment on MSNBC's "Countdown," the Keith Olbermann suspension episode (which may rapidly transition into the Keith Olbermann firing episode) just keeps on getting more outlandish. Late this afternoon, the unapologetically left- (sorry, "forward") leaning cable news show host was unceremoniously suspended by his network without pay, indefinitely, following the revelation that he gave undisclosed campaign contributions to Democratic candidates running in the 2010 midterms. Hours later, his supposed interim replacement, Chris Hayes, was yanked from the show as well, but ...

Juan Williams' Firing: Censorship or Partisan Games Between NPR and Fox News?

Juan Williams' Firing: Censorship or Partisan Games Between NPR and Fox News?

Always vigilant at resisting any and all attempts to squelch liberal voices, the political Left has been exhibiting an untoward inclination to suppress the speech of those with whom they do not agree. This disquieting impulse reveals itself in myriad ways, from shouting down Karl Rove in a Beverly Hills bookstore and boycotting businesses that contribute to Republicans, to advocating an Orwellian-named "fairness doctrine" designed to muzzle right-wing talk radio or demanding the firing of commentators who run afoul of their sensibilities. The caveat should be added that this instinct is not ...

95,000 Jobs Lost in September: How Many Is That, Really?

By  Carl Franzen - AOL News
95,000 Jobs Lost in September: How Many Is That, Really?

(Oct. 8) -- For the past two years, talk about the economy has basically come to center around one critical indicator: job creation. Specifically, the fact that in this post-recession, achingly slow recovery period, new hiring hasn't been anywhere close to the rate required to get us back to pre-recession levels anytime soon. This morning's news that the economy shed some 95,000 non-farm jobs is not that surprising, but it's also not very reassuring either. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics points out, the losses are mostly due to cuts in government jobs or the end of temporary government ...
