Lost and found. Fourteen Wisconsin Democratic lawmakers went on the lam today, staging a protest against Republican Gov. Scott Walker's bill that would eliminate collective bargaining rights for most state workers. Late in the day, however, they were discovered to be holed up a Best Western hotel in Rockford, Ill. As they are out of state, they cannot be forced to return to participate in an open session. That means that Walker's efforts to hold a vote on the measure that would dramatically increase the amount that state workers must pay into pension and health plans cannot proceed. Surge ...
WHITE SWAN, Wash. - Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze fueled by strong winds on Washington's Yakama Indian Reservation that destroyed 18 homes, officials said. The fire apparently started in one house in the early Saturday afternoon and then spread in the town of White Swan, bolstered by 40 mph winds. The blaze raged for most of the day. Early Sunday, Yakima County District 5 Fire Chief Brian Vogel told The Associated Press that the wild land fires had been controlled, but thousands of logs on log decks at one of the mills were still burning. They're expected to burn for another 24 ...
Two firefighters died trying to fight a blaze in an abandoned Chicago building today and at least 17 others were seriously injured despite frantic rescue efforts by nearly 100 fellow firefighters who rushed to the scene. Four firefighters were trapped after a wall collapsed in the burning laundry building on the city's South Side. All were pulled from the rubble, but only two survived, according to the Sun-Times. Dramatic video of the scene showed dozens of firefighters working feverishly to pull the wall off the men, brick by brick, just three days before Christmas. The firefighters ...
CHICAGO -- As fires go, the one that broke out Wednesday in a small vacant building on the city's South Side was likely to be pretty routine for the Chicago Fire Department. Instead, it caused the deaths of two firefighters, trapped under debris with two others when a wall and roof collapsed, and injured 17. In an eerie coincidence, it happened on the 100th anniversary of the Union Stock Yards fire, which killed 21 Chicago firefighters when a wall collapsed and stood as one of the nation's worst tragedies for firefighter deaths until 9/11. The call about the trapped firefighters interrupted ...

The help includes expert firefighting teams and aircraft from Israel's erstwhile Muslim ally -- Turkey -- and some of its Arab neighbors, Egypt and Jordan, with whom the Jewish state has peace treaties. Two Turkish helicopters landed in Israel this morning, and more are en route. Dan Balilty, AP International firefighters aid in extinguishing the wildfire over Ein Hod in northern Israel. (Oct. 3) -- The flames are gone from the most destructive fire in Colorado's history, but the debate is still heated. At issue are private firefighters who enter restricted areas with their own firefighting equipment to help protect the homes of insurance policyholders. More than 1,000 firefighters and 100 engines responded to the Fourmile Canyon fire in September in the foothills west of Boulder. Among them were 13 firefighters with five fully equipped engines who were contracted by Chubb Insurance Co., and four firefighters with two trucks sent by insurer Chartis Inc. "If there is cause ...
(Aug. 23) -- When her father collapsed in their living room, 3-year-old Alesaundra Tafoya knew what to do. The Manteca, Calif., toddler walked two blocks to the fire station, where she told firefighters her father was "frozen" and needed help. "I've been here over 20 years, it's the first time I've had a 3-year-old walk up to the fire station," Manteca Fire Department Capt. Robert Villalovoz told CBS 13. "She walked us down to her house and there her dad was, sitting in the living room, needing medical care." According to the Manteca Bulletin, Alesaundra made it as far as the parking lot ...
The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a $26 billion bill that Democrats say will save the jobs of over 300,000 school teachers, municipal workers and first responders such as police officers and firefighters. The measure's passage hands President Barack Obama a key election-year victory as he seeks to convince skeptical voters that his economic recovery plan is working. ...
