(Oct. 8) -- For the past two years, talk about the economy has basically come to center around one critical indicator: job creation. Specifically, the fact that in this post-recession, achingly slow recovery period, new hiring hasn't been anywhere close to the rate required to get us back to pre-recession levels anytime soon. This morning's news that the economy shed some 95,000 non-farm jobs is not that surprising, but it's also not very reassuring either. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics points out, the losses are mostly due to cuts in government jobs or the end of temporary government ...
(July 8) -- Does this sound like a fireable offense? "Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.. One of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot. #Lebanon" For Octavia Nasr, apparently it was. At the time of her tweet, which has been deleted, she was CNN's senior Middle East editor, a crucial position for any international news organization. But she was reportedly axed on Wednesday after controversy and criticism erupted over what appeared to be high praise for a spiritual leader with ties to Hezbollah, which the United States and Israel consider a terrorist ...
(June 18) -- Convicted killer Ronnie Lee Gardner died by a rifle barrage this morning after nearly 25 years on death row in Utah, in the state's first execution by firing squad in 14 years. Gardner, 49, was only the third American in 33 years to die by the controversial method. He was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. local time. Just before midnight, Gardner was strapped to a chair, hooded and a target pinned to his chest. Five executioners -- all police officers who volunteered for the job -- stood 25 feet away with .30-caliber Winchester rifles. One fired a blank, but no one knows which, ...
UPDATE Statement from the McCain campaign: "Today's report shows that the Governor acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan. The report also illustrates what we've known all along: this was a partisan led inquiry run by Obama supporters and the Palins were completely justified in their concern regarding Trooper Wooten given his violent and rogue behavior. Lacking evidence to support the original Monegan allegation, the Legislative Council seriously overreached, making a tortured argument to find fault without basis in law or fact. The Governor is ...

Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner. First, Clinton loyalist Paul Begala:"I have nothing but contempt for Mr. Penn," said Begala at a New York City breakfast sponsored by the non-profit group Public Agenda. Poor Mark Penn. The Chief Political Strategist that everybody loves to hate is at it again. Only this time, he may just have gone too far. You see, this week he was moonlighting for his lobbying gig, and attended a conference promoting a free-trade agreement with Colombia that Hillary Clinton officially opposes. From the Wall Street Journal:Attendance by this adviser, Mark Penn, was confirmed by two Columbian officials. He wasn't there in his campaign role, but in his separate job as chief executive of Burson-Marsteller Worldwide, an international communications and lobbying firm. The firm has ...
