First Lady to Write Book About White House Garden

Michelle Obama is working on a book that's bound to be as dirty as it is wholesome. The first lady has received a book deal from Crown, a unit of Random House, to write about the kitchen garden she started at the White House as part of her efforts to promote healthy eating. The as-yet-untitled book will be published in April 2012. The book will describe how Obama was inspired to plant the first edible garden on the White House's South Lawn since Eleanor Roosevelt's World War II-era victory garden. She will also share some of her family's favorite healthy recipes. The first lady has made ...

The Dish on First Ladies, From Martha Washington to Michelle Obama

The Dish on First Ladies, From Martha Washington to Michelle Obama

WASHINGTON -- If President Barack Obama wants to expand broadband coverage to most Americans, he might want to start at home. That's because, according to first lady Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, the upstairs residence of the White House isn't wireless. Not only that, but Susan Sher said there is just one phone in the official living quarters, forcing the Obamas to dash from room to room when it rings. "It's sort of quaint," said Sher, who left the East Wing in January to return home to Chicago. The behind-the-scenes revelation was among the many shared by former White House ...

Sarah Palin: Do We Hear Sighs of Reluctance About 2012?

WOODBURY, N.Y. – After weeks in the shadows with only a flicker of Facebook postings, Sarah Palin emerged Thursday for a lucrative and surprisingly revealing question-and-answer session before the Long Island Association, a business group used to hosting former presidents. During an hour in which she was quizzed in a more probing fashion than is often the norm on Fox News, Palin proved that she can create more headlines from a single luncheon than are possible from six months on the Mitt Romney beat. Palin tantalized her audience (who paid $300 and up for the privilege, with a backstage ...

Obama Pushes Effort to Protect Public Lands

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says a new administration effort to protect public lands will put people back to work in tourism and recreation and help Americans stay healthier by encouraging outdoor activities. The initiative largely incorporates existing programs under a new name, "America's Great Outdoors." Still, it aims to double federal spending on land and water conservation to $900 million. The money would be used to buy private land for public use and provide grants to states. Obama said it is important to conserve public lands, even in tough economic times, and that the new ...

Michelle Obama's Daughters Won't Be Logging On to Facebook [VIDEO]

Michelle Obama is just fine with keeping her kids off Facebook. During an appearance on NBC's "Today" show, the first lady said her daughters Sasha, 9, and Malia, 12, are not on the social networking site, and that's not only because of her parental discretion. "I think we are lucky that there are a lot of real constraints, things like Secret Service," she explained. "But I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook." Maybe the girls will be on Facebook when they are older, but for now, Michelle says, "it's not necessary." Check out the "Today" appearance in its entirety, ...

Michelle Obama's Dress at the State Dinner: Everyone Totally Loved It

Wednesday evening's state dinner at the White House may have been about the U.S.-China relationship, but Michelle Obama's dress is getting plenty of ink today, too. The first lady wore a bright red, silk organza gown designed by Alexander McQueen's new creative director, Sarah Burton. On the Runway, the fashion blog of The New York Times, gives the dress a thumbs-up: "Her choice had just enough pomp to signal the importance of this state dinner." Michelle Obama's Chief of Staff Susan Sher Leaving White House

First Lady Michelle Obama is hunting for her third chief of staff following the announcement Tuesday that Susan Sher, her longtime friend, will leave the job after the first of the year. "Susan has been both a colleague and a dear friend for decades, and I have been grateful every day for her leadership and wise counsel in Washington," Mrs. Obama said in a statement. "I also very much appreciate her generosity in staying longer than she initially planned -- spending so many months away from her family in Chicago -- to help me build my office in the East Wing. I wish her all the best." ...

83-Year-Old Retiree Wants to Win White House From Cousin Barack

(Oct. 24) -- In order to get out of a great recession, maybe the country needs a president who lived through the Great Depression. And a retired engineer in Lancaster, Calif., thinks he knows just the guy for the job: himself. Don Cordell, 83, has been running for the nation's highest office since 2000 and doesn't plan to quit until he wins the hearts and minds of his fellow citizens. If elected in 2012, he would be the oldest U.S. president in history, even older than Ronald Reagan was when he retired, but Cordell sees his age as an advantage.
