Libyan City Celebrates Freedom From Gadhafi

TOBRUK, Libya -- Thousands in the coastal town of Tobruk celebrated their freedom from Moammar Gadhafi on Wednesday by waving flags of the old monarchy, honking horns and firing guns in the air around a city square where he once executed people. Officers in the army units that had defected to the rebellion against Libya's leader for the past four decades pledged to defend this "liberated territory" with their lives, despite Gadhafi's threats Tuesday to retake it. "The army in the east is with all the people," declared Maj. Salma Faraj Issa, a top aide to the general commanding the army units ...

Chilean Flag Mistakenly Printed on Texas Ballot

(Oct .13) -- The rescued Chilean miners will be pleased to know that Texas' Atascosa County is celebrating the South American country, albeit unintentionally and unconventionally. Elections officials from the region south of San Antonio are trying to explain why the Chilean flag -- and not the similarly designed Texas flag -- is prominently displayed on the county's absentee ballot form. Absentee ballot forms sent out by one Texas county have for years erroneously displayed the flag of Chile instead of the state's flag. Troy Knudson, a Ph.D. candidate studying in Japan, detected the ...

Five Reasons to Be Bullish on America

I recognize that the mood in the U.S. isn't particularly buoyant right now. Between high unemployment rates, a recent near-miss terrorist attack, and the collective angst around the future of health care reform, Americans of all political stripes are pretty gloomy. Which is why I was shocked to meet someone the other night who's betting the farm on America in the long run. He's a British businessman whom I met at a dinner party. And he recently made the very calculated choice to move his wife and two children to New York City . . . for good. As an American who's lived in the U.K. for 3½ ...
