Widespread, Dangerous Tornado Outbreak Enters Day Three

Day Three of the tornado outbreak will target a large portion of the eastern U.S. today and tonight, with a risk of tornadoes from New York state southward to the Gulf Coast, including a high risk in portions of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. The threat of dangerous thunderstorms will linger along the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday. The experts at the government's Storm Prediction Center warn that "an outbreak of tornadoes and damaging winds" is likely in the high-risk area through tonight. A significant threat exists in the area outlined as having a moderate risk -- the second ...

Storms Could Spawn Tornadoes, Life-Threatening Flooding This Week

The final week of April will be similar to the first three, with dangerous thunderstorms over a large portion of the U.S. The forecast includes the potential for tornadoes, life-threatening flash flooding and large hail in highly populated regions from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic region from today through Wednesday. Potential tornado-spawning thunderstorms will stretch from eastern Oklahoma and northern Texas to Pennsylvania today and tonight, encompassing the cities of St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Dallas. The greatest risk within this larger area appears to be in ...

As US Recovers, Another Tornado Outbreak Possible This Week

With parts of the U.S. still recovering from a destructive and deadly three-day tornado outbreak, a storm system moving from the Rockies to the East Coast may very well spawn another round of tornadoes this week, especially from the Midwest to parts of the Deep South. There were nearly 270 reported tornadoes last week, with the death toll reaching at least 44 in six states. At least 21 of those deaths were in North Carolina, according to The Associated Press. The first tornadoes hit Thursday in Oklahoma, where two were killed. Officials also reported seven deaths in Arkansas, seven in ...

Major Northeast Snowstorm Is No April Fools' Day Joke

As the calendar changes from March to April, the Northeast will be hit with a winter storm beginning tonight that would be impressive even in the heart of winter. The result will be heavy snow and potential travel delays, downed tree limbs and power outages over a large portion of New England and upstate New York from tonight through Friday, April Fools' Day. The accumulating snow will extend southward into the mid-Atlantic region. Toby Talbot, AP Dave Jacobs tries to shovel out his car earlier this month in Montpelier, Vt. The heaviest snow will occur from the higher elevations ...

Floods Trigger Southern Thailand Landslides; 15 Dead

BANGKOK -- Southern Thailand faced more torrential rain after heavy downpours caused at least 15 deaths and forced the Thai navy to help evacuate hundreds of tourists stranded on some of the country's famous resort islands. Authorities reported Wednesday that at least four people had died in landslides in Krabi province, bringing to 15 the death toll in the flood-battered region. More than 100 people were injured, and dozens missing. With access to some of the seven villages hit by landslides difficult and much of the region's telephone service cut off, it was feared the actual death toll ...

More Snow, Flooding, Dangerous Thunderstorms This Weekend

More Snow, Flooding, Dangerous Thunderstorms This Weekend

If the months were assigned personalities, then March would most likely be labeled emotional and moody. It's capable of prolonged periods of warmth and tranquility, but a fit of weather rage is just as likely. A storm moving from the Rockies today to the mid-Atlantic region on Sunday will be fairly representative of a multifaceted spring storm, producing weather ranging from accumulating snow to dangerous thunderstorms to flooding. New snow accumulations will locally exceed a foot in the mountains of Utah and Colorado today, where, combined with winds in excess of 25 mph, travel will be ...

Welcome to Spring: Several Snowstorms Expected This Week

Spring may have officially arrived Sunday, but you'd never know it from this week's weather maps. Significant snow will fall across much of the northern tier of the country, as well as in the Western mountains. One storm might even reach blizzard strength in the northern Plains on Tuesday and Wednesday. Winter storm warnings are in effect for northern New England today, and winter storm watches are in effect across the northern Plains and upper Midwest for an intense storm from Tuesday through Wednesday. Meanwhile, following on the heels of a potent weekend storm, new storms will take aim at ...

Will Wild Winter Give Way to a Stormy Spring?

Will Wild Winter Give Way to a Stormy Spring?

Celebrated weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil seems to have been reasonably accurate in his prediction of an early spring back on Feb. 2, at a time when most of the country was in the grip of a seemingly unending winter. But the stretch of more moderate weather this past month or so, especially in the eastern half of the country, doesn't mean that the weather has calmed down, with snow and cold in the West and flooding and thunderstorms from the Plains to the East. And it's unlikely that the transition to spring, beginning at 7:21 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be smooth. Increased Tornado ...

Swollen Rivers Spread Flood Risks Across US -- Even in Drought Areas

Swollen Rivers Spread Flood Risks Across US -- Even in Drought Areas

Numerous rivers in the Plains, Midwest, Deep South and Northeast are at risk for flooding through the remainder of the week, even in areas suffering from drought and where little rain has fallen recently. The flooding in the Deep South might seem surprising since the region is experiencing a widespread, intense drought. However, recent heavy rainfall over a small portion of the region, combined with water flowing into rivers upstream where rain has been persistent, has resulted in local flooding. This includes parts of the Mississippi River and Alabama River, where flooding advisories and ...
