NOAA, FDA to Test for Corexit in Gulf Seafood After All

(Aug. 13) -- In a rather sudden about-face, U.S. government officials say they will begin testing gulf seafood for the presence of dispersants used to combat the BP oil spill. The move, according to The Associated Press, is meant to assure an anxious public about the safety of consuming fish, shrimp and oysters caught in the Gulf of Mexico, where chemical dispersants such as Nalco's Corexit 9500 have been sprayed liberally throughout the cleanup effort. BP says that, to date, approximately 1.8 million gallons worth of dispersant have been used to help break down an estimated 205.8 million ...

BP's 'Static Kill' Solution for the Oil Spill, Explained

(July 26) -- Meet the "static kill," BP's latest solution to the oil spill conundrum. On Monday, BP and the federal government announced they were set to begin implementing the static kill plan beginning Aug. 2, just days before a new relief well is scheduled to be completed. But how does this latest attempt to seal the well differ from the failed top kill, and why is it necessary now that the Top Hat 10 cap has effectively halted oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico? After looking into the latest and greatest oil well fix, Surge Desk presents the following answers to some of the most ...

Obama Family to Lead by Example, Will Vacation on Gulf Coast in August

(July 22) -- Over the weekend of Aug. 14, President Brack Obama and his family will vacation in a symbolic spot: Florida's Gulf Coast. Obama has frequently encouraged Americans to head to Gulf Coast beaches that have remained open during the BP oil spill, the Associated Press reported. Now, it appears he will be leading by example. The vacation will be the fifth time that the president has visited the region since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and oil began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. As yet, there are no details on where in Florida the first family will stay. By the ...

Report: Tony Hayward Preparing to Quit BP

(July 20) -- According to The Times of London, embattled BP CEO Tony Hayward is preparing to depart the company. Citing sources within the company, the paper said that Hayward's exit could come "as early as next month." One day earlier, Paddy Power, an Irish oddsmaker, closed future bets on the timing of Hawyard's departure after what the Guardian newspaper termed "a surge of wagers on Hayward's imminent departure over the last few days." More from the Guardian: Paddy Power started offering odds of 2-1 that Hayward would vacate the chief executive's seat by 31 December. By early June, the ...

'Mystery Plumber' May Have Solved BP Oil Spill

'Mystery Plumber' May Have Solved BP Oil Spill

(July 16) -- When you've got a leak, you call a plumber. So perhaps it's not surprising that a "mystery plumber" might be the person ultimately responsible for helping BP stop the massive oil leak 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. According to a report from The Christian Science Monitor, six weeks ago, a plumber who did not reveal his identity contacted University of California, Berkeley, engineering professor Robert Bea with an idea for how to fix BP's gushing Deepwater Horizon oil well. The man sent Bea a sketch, which impressed the professor so much that he forwarded it ...

BP Begins Critical Oil Cap Pressure Test [Live Video]

BP Begins Critical Oil Cap Pressure Test [Live Video]

(July 14) -- After the government delayed tests on BP's new Top Hat 10 oil well cap Tuesday, the company finally began slowly shutting down three main valves this evening. With luck, the company said, the cap could effectively halt the nation's worst oil spill in history. Initial signs were positive, the company told The Associated Press. U.S. officials held up the pressure tests to further review geological data, MSNBC reported, but concluded there was insufficient evidence to suggest that shutting down the valves could make the spill even worse. Live video of the operation showed that ...

Update: Is the Oil Spill Cap Working? [Live Video]

(July 13) -- Across the country, Americans are anxiously awaiting the moment when they can see with their own eyes that the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill has finally, conclusively been stopped. With live video feeds from 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico focused on the Top Hat 10, BP's new and supposedly improved cap, it is hard not to notice that a column of oil continues to flow freely into the water. As the company is still in the process of slowly shutting down a series of valves, even if the cap proves effective that flowing oil could remain visible for some time to ...

Hurricane Alex Might Actually Help Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup Efforts

Hurricane Alex Might Actually Help Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup Efforts

After weeks of hearing how a major storm in the Gulf of Mexico could worsen the oil spill disaster, a new theory has been put forth that suggests just the opposite: Hurricane Alex, with its high winds and heavy surf, may be an overall asset to helping clean up the oil spill. That claim may seem counterintuitive, given that Alex's choppy seas have virtually shut down BP cleanup efforts, and have turned waves on the shoreline red with incoming oil. But Chris Vaccaro, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said that the "washing machine" effect that Alex is having ...

Waves From Hurricane Alex Could Send Fresh Oil Onto Florida Beaches

Waves From Hurricane Alex Could Send Fresh Oil Onto Florida Beaches

Tropical Storm Alex is expected to be upgraded to hurricane status over the next day or so. With its higher winds, the storm will also generate bigger waves, some of which are forecast to roll across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida. In today's Pensacola News Journal, that prospect is just the latest cause for concern for local residents. Florida Department of Emergency Management meteorologist Amy Godsey said rough waves churned by the storm will disrupt efforts to corral and burn surface oil and will likely push more oil and tar onto Panhandle beaches throughout the week. As the ...

Viral Video: 'Mommy Get the Oil Off!'

This was the week that oil came to Florida's beaches. On Wednesday, Pensacola Beach was blackened with oil. Nearby Destin Beach, which had largely been spared the outward effects of BP's downed Deepwater Horizon rig, was also stung with the realization that it could no longer claim its sands were free of oil. Perhaps no single piece of video captured that turn of fortune better than the following YouTube clip, in which a little girl playing on the shore steps in the toxic, oily muck and cries, "Mommy, get the oil off!" While cleanup crews have been dispatched to Pensacola and Destin, ...
