Ford Expands F-150 Pickup Recall to Nearly 1.2 Million Vehicles

DETROIT -- Under pressure from government safety regulators, Ford Motor Co. is expanding a recall of the popular F-150 pickup truck to include nearly 1.2 million vehicles that may have defective air bags. The additional recall, announced Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers trucks from the 2004 through 2006 model years. An electrical short can cause the air bags to deploy unexpectedly, in some cases injuring drivers. In February, Ford agreed to fix 150,000 of the trucks but resisted the government's wishes to recall all 1.2 million trucks that may have the ...

Earthquake Could Further Jolt Toyota and Other Japanese Automakers

It was already a difficult year for Japan's largest carmaker Toyota, dealing with the wake of a year of recalls affecting more than 10 million vehicles worldwide. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake Friday, Toyota and other Japanese automakers could be facing supply interruptions that could compromise business all over the world. Worry over the extent of the damage to the companies facilities, as well as the Japanese economy, sent stocks reeling Monday morning in Tokyo after relatively calm after hours trading over the weekend. Mitsubishi Motors was down 11 percent in early ...

Ford Focus, Electric Version, Unveiled at CES [VIDEO]

Ford is all charged up. The Ford Motor Co. revealed its first all-electric vehicle, the Focus Electric, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. Although many of the specifics are not yet public, the company did emphasize that the Focus Electric's charging time will be just half that of competing electric vehicles. Still, because the concept remains in its early stages, Ford CEO Alan Mulally anticipates challenges involving cost and charging infrastructure. "The cost of batteries for the all-electrics and the size and the charging requirements are going to be relatively limited ...

Who Deserves Credit for GM's Revival?

(Nov. 17) -- Punctuating an astonishing turnaround, General Motors will offer its stock to the public Thursday in what could be the biggest IPO in U.S. history. As investors line up to place their bets, it's striking to think that just 16 months ago the automaker was on its deathbed. With that in mind, who deserves credit for GM's revival? Business writers wrestle it out: It's an Amazing Turnaround Story, writes Halah Touryalai at Forbes: GM stock has become such a hot item that underwriters stopped taking orders for the IPO yesterday, which was more than seven times oversubscribed, ...

Norma Rae in the U.K.

Norma Rae in the U.K.

For those needing a reminder about the power of female solidarity and the significance of organized labor, "Made in Dagenham" tells the story of a women's labor strike at a Ford Motor plant in the United Kingdom in 1968. It's a feel-good feminist movie with women uniting across class lines and British Employment Secretary Barbara Castle, the only woman in Prime Minister Harold Wilson's Cabinet, defiantly backing the strikers to win them near-parity with men's wages and two years later the Equal Pay Act of 1970. There were only 187 women in the work force of 55,000, and it was the first time ...

Five Positive Economic Signs for Obama and the Country

(Nov. 5) -- It's the economy, stupid, and it seems to be getting better. Because of a bad economy, Democrats and President Barack Obama were "shellacked" in the midterm elections. As that drama unfolded over the past week, a slew of new indicators is showing that the nation's economy had already begun turning in the right direction. Surge Desk has a roundup. 1. Job growth On Friday, the Labor Department announced that the U.S. economy added 150,000 jobs in October, higher than most analysts' expectations. It was the first positive job growth figure since May. In addition, the Labor ...

Suddenly, US Automakers Are Doing Just Fine

(Nov. 3) -- Back from the brink. The Big Three U.S. automakers posted solid sales in October, roughly two years after two of them received massive bailouts from the Obama administration. Ford said its October profits were up 19.2 percent from the year before, Chrysler saw a 37 percent jump and General Motors notched a 3.5 percent annual sales gain, The New York Times reported. Sponsored Links By comparison, Toyota saw a 4.4 percent drop in year-over-year October sales from 2009 to 2010, The Wall Street Journal reported, though the company has seen an overall increase in sales of 0.6 ...

Politicos Dream of Muscle Cars

Politicos Dream of Muscle Cars

Elections are supposed to be about politics and public policy and big issues. And this election has its share of all that, given the stakes. But elections are also about people -- the kind of people who want to run for federal office. And we at AOL News wanted to get a better sense of just who these people are. So rather than asking a bunch of boring policy questions, we invited candidates for the House and Senate to answer 10 mostly fun questions. We got a response rate of about 5 percent. And while the results aren't exactly scientifically valid, they are still pretty interesting. Here's ...

83-Year-Old Retiree Wants to Win White House From Cousin Barack

(Oct. 24) -- In order to get out of a great recession, maybe the country needs a president who lived through the Great Depression. And a retired engineer in Lancaster, Calif., thinks he knows just the guy for the job: himself. Don Cordell, 83, has been running for the nation's highest office since 2000 and doesn't plan to quit until he wins the hearts and minds of his fellow citizens. If elected in 2012, he would be the oldest U.S. president in history, even older than Ronald Reagan was when he retired, but Cordell sees his age as an advantage. Courtesy of Don Cordell Don Cordell, 83, has ...
