Old Fights Plague Climate Talks in Cancun

Old Fights Plague Climate Talks in Cancun

CANCUN, Mexico (Dec. 6) -- Deep, longstanding divisions between industrialized powers and developing nations over how to fight global warming are festering as negotiators today begin their second week of talks on climate change. The developed world wants emerging economies like China and India to take a greater role in reducing carbon emissions, but those countries insist that rich nations have a "historic responsibility" to reduce greenhouse gases. Developing countries also argue that they will need to continue to depend on fossil fuels to help their economies grow. "We need three aspects ...

Auto Critics Getting Charged Up for Chevy Volt

Auto Critics Getting Charged Up for Chevy Volt

(Oct. 11) -- The Volt, Chevrolet's new quasi-electric car, doesn't go into production until Nov. 11. But some select journalists got a chance to test-drive the car early, and the first reviews are starting to crop up. The consensus seems to be that it works. The Volt is technically a hybrid, but unlike other hybrids, it can run for about 40 miles on an all-electric, rechargeable motor. But unlike, say, the Nissan Leaf, it also has a gasoline engine. It's being touted as a transition vehicle that can be practical for the commuter without being crippling for longer trips. The cost of the car ...

Peak Oil Is Here: What Should We Do?

Peak Oil Is Here: What Should We Do?

(Oct. 7) -- The Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas made a dire prediction today. The world has been extracting oil from the earth for just 150 years, but "peak oil," the point at which fuel production will begin to decrease while demand continues to increase, has finally come. "We are at the point of no return," said Jim Baldauf, ASPO-USA president. "Without affordable energy to drive our economy, we can expect price spikes and economic crisis to be the new normal. The debate about peak oil is over; it is time for bold action. If we do not change our current approach, we will see ...

What Americans Think the World Will Look Like in 2050

What Americans Think the World Will Look Like in 2050

A large majority of Americans believe that in the year 2050 computers will be able to converse like human beings, cancer will be cured and artificial limbs will perform better than natural ones, according to a Pew Research Center poll based on a survey conducted in April and released Tuesday. The poll was conducted in conjunction with Smithsonian magazine for a special issue marking its 40th anniversary. But while Stanley Kubrick may have foreseen a future in "2001: A Space Odyssey" where a Pan American commercial craft carried civilians to the moon, only 53 percent believe that ordinary ...

Opinion: Earth Day at 40 -- Looking Ahead

(April 22) -- Earth Day is a great time to come together to celebrate our environmental successes. It's hard to believe it's been 40 years since the first one. Our country has seen a string of incredible environmental triumphs over the past 40 years. Citizens from across the country have repeatedly come together to demand better -- and we've gotten it in many cases. I can think of two major highlights very quickly: the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Our skies are cleaner than they were 40 years ago, as is our water. These successes should serve as a great inspiration to us as we ...

Opinion: Time to Go Nuclear on Energy

Opinion: Time to Go Nuclear on Energy

(Jan. 29) – As part of his push for clean-energy jobs, President Obama in his State of the Union speech specifically called for "building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country." The line got standing applause from both sides of the aisle. And for good reason. Today, fossil fuels meet 85 percent of the energy needs of the United States. If we are to control the threat of climate change, we (and the rest of the world) will have to restructure our energy system to reduce dependence on energy sources that, like conventionally burned fossil fuels, release ...

Gore Pushes 10-Year Energy Plan

Gore Pushes 10-Year Energy Plan

Former Vice-President turned environmental activist Al Gore issued a challenge to politicians and policy makers yesterday. Gore wants the United States to commit to producing 100% of its electric power from renewable sources, like wind, solar, clean coal, and geothermal energy, within 10 years. Gore cited the rising cost of oil as well as the alleged impact of burning fossil fuels on global warming as reasons for his call to action. Currently, renewable sources account for about nine percent of the 3.7 billion kilowatt hours of electricity produced and consumed in the United States."I have ...
