At issue are private firefighters who enter restricted areas with their own firefighting equipment to help protect the homes of insurance policyholders. More than 1,000 firefighters and 100 engines responded to the Fourmile Canyon fire in September in the foothills west of Boulder. Among them were 13 firefighters with five fully equipped engines who were contracted by Chubb Insurance Co., and four firefighters with two trucks sent by insurer Chartis Inc. "If there is cause ...
BOULDER, Colo. -- I'm in love with a helicopter. It's a high-tech gizmo, maybe not as sophisticated as the one Jamie Lee Curtis hung from in "True Lies," but still pretty impressive. Last week, this helicopter -- actually three or four of them in rotation -- flew over my house many days, sometimes into the evening. I could read the numbers on the side as I watched from the deck or bicycled to the store. They hovered over nearby Wonderland Lake, sucking up water into a 2,650-gallon tank, then taking off over the foothills to drop the water on the Fourmile Canyon Fire. Last week's ...
(Sept. 10) – The worst wildfire in Colorado history is getting even worse, with winds whipping flames toward the college town of Boulder and threatening even more evacuations. The Fourmile Canyon fire has burned 170 homes in the scenic foothills of the Rockies since Labor Day, spreading over about 6,400 acres, or more than 10 square miles. It' is only 30 percent contained, fire command spokeswoman Mary Dobbs told USA Today. And it's still spreading. Boulder residents are being told to water their lawns, stock up on medication and park their cars in the direction of quick getaway ...
(Sept. 9) -- As winds began picking up, authorities canceled plans to allow Colorado residents back in their homes in the foothills outside Boulder as firefighters struggle to contain a wildfire that's already devoured 169 houses and is still mostly out of control. About 3,500 people have been out of their homes for four days due to the blaze, which was about 30 percent contained this afternoon. No injuries have been reported. At one point as many as nine people were unaccounted for, but authorities said they have all been located. Evacuation orders were temporarily lifted this morning ...
BOULDER, Colo. -- This week, my community is experiencing the worst fire in the state's history. So far, almost 140 homes and other buildings have been destroyed; many families -- including those of several firefighters -- have lost everything. About 3,000 people are staying with friends and family or at hotels as 6,150 acres in the scenic but rugged mountains burn. Fortunately, there are no injuries or deaths thus far, though four people are missing. Since the first smell of smoke and a glance at the strange amber-colored sunlight at around 11 a.m. Monday, following the fire has consumed ...
(Sept. 8) -- Four people are unaccounted for in the area where the Fourmile Canyon wildfire has been burning northwest of Boulder, Colo., since Monday, police said today. The Boulder County Sheriff's Office said it had received 20 missing persons reports and had located 16 of the missing, according to ABC7 - Denver. The remaining four missing people might not have evacuated, Sheriff's Cmdr. Rich Brough said. The fire has spread across 6,168 acres and has destroyed at least 135 homes, forcing some 3,500 people to evacuate. None of the fire has been contained. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter ...
