Boston Hospital Performs Second Full Face Transplant

BOSTON -- Doctors at a Boston hospital have performed the nation's second full-face transplant, less than a month after the first. A team of more than 30 doctors, nurses and other staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital worked for more than 14 hours last week to replace the full facial area of 30-year-old Mitch Hunter, of Speedway, Ind. The procedure replaced Hunter's nose, eyelids, lips, facial animation muscles and the nerves that power them and provide sensation. Hunter suffered his injuries from a high-voltage electrical wire following a 2001 car accident. The donor family requested an...

University Prof Calls for Congressional UFO Hearing

Congress has a full plate of hearings coming up. Everything from medical liability reform, creating and promoting jobs and investigating Internet child pornography to assessing China's behavior and making immigration work for American minorities. Do you think the House or Senate will have any extra time to discuss UFOs? While it sometimes might seem as though our lawmakers are from outer space, this hasn't stopped one college professor from urging Congress to take a serious look at unidentified flying objects. Citing findings from a 12-year-old groundbreaking French UFO study, University of ...

US to Give Libyan Rebels Non-Lethal Aid

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration plans to give the Libyan opposition $25 million in non-lethal assistance in the first direct U.S. aid to the rebels after weeks of assessing their capabilities and intentions, officials said Wednesday. Amid a debate over whether to offer the rebels broader assistance, including cash and possibly weapons and ammunition, the administration has informed Congress that President Barack Obama intends to use his so-called "drawdown authority" to give the opposition, led by the Transitional National Council in Benghazi, up to $25 million in surplus American good...

France Vows to Step Up Airstrikes on Gadhafi's Forces

PARIS -- France vowed Wednesday to step up airstrikes on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces and acknowledged that it has military officers already working with Libyan rebels on the ground. Italy joined Britain in announcing their commitment of military instructors to train the rebels, who have failed to rout Moammar Gadhafi's forces despite weeks of NATO-led airstrikes. European powers and the Libyan opposition remained firm against sending foreign ground troops into Libya, a dangerous and politically risky step. However NATO, which is leading the U.N.-sanctioned international military o...

France to Italy: We Don't Want Your Tunisian Immigrants

MENTON, France -- Simmering tensions between Italy and France over the influx of thousands of Tunisian immigrants reached the boiling point after French riot police blocked trains carrying North Africans bound for the French Riviera from southern Italy. More than 20,000 Tunisian immigrants have arrived in Italy since the January revolution in their country. Rome granted them residence permits of six months so they can join "friends and family" in France and elsewhere in Europe -- a move that has infuriated France. On Sunday, about 350 mostly Italian activists supporting the Tunisian immigran...

US, Britain, France Vow to Push Ahead in Libya

WASHINGTON -- The United States, Britain and France are pledging to keep up the military campaign in Libya until leader Moammar Gadhafi leaves, a display of unity despite European complaints about the low-profile U.S. role. Libyan TV / AP Libyan TV broadcast footage shows what it says is Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi defiantly waving to his supporters on Thursday while being driven around Tripoli standing up through the sunroof of a car. In a joint declaration, President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy say they will not stop ...

Q&A on French Burqa Ban: We Are Not 'Submissive to Men'

NICE, France -- It's a short bus ride from the glittering resorts on the Mediterranean beaches to another world -- the housing projects in the low-income, mostly Muslim neighborhood on the edge of the city called the Ariane. The 31-year-old wife and mother in one apartment above a park filled with children was not happy to see an AOL News reporter at the door, asking about the new law that went into effect Monday barring Muslim women in France from wearing the Islamic face veil in public. "I'm angry," she said. "The law is humiliating -- and it's ridiculous. It's just part of a bias against ...

Forces Capture Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo in Bunker

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast -- Forces stormed the bunker where Ivory Coast's strongman Laurent Gbagbo hung on to power Monday, arresting the man whose refusal to hand over the presidency to the election winner left hundreds dead and threatened to re-ignite a civil war in the world's largest cocoa producer. Gbagbo's dramatic arrest came after days of heavy fighting during which French and U.N. helicopters fired rockets at his presidential residence. Forces backing the internationally recognized winner Alassane Ouattara had begun a rapid offensive to oust Gbagbo late last month. Issard Soumah...
