N.Y. Firefighter Discrimination Ruling Has Echoes of New Haven Case

N.Y. Firefighter Discrimination Ruling Has Echoes of New Haven Case

A story about firefighters who may have been discriminated against slipped under the radar this week. In this case, no one named Ricci was involved. A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled Wednesday that New York City used tests that had little relation to firefighting, and that discriminated against black and Hispanic job applicants. A lawsuit had been brought by the Justice Department in 2007 after a complaint by the Vulcan Society, an association of black firefighters. In some ways, this case mirrors the lawsuit brought by white and Hispanic firefighters in New Haven, Conn., after a ...

Ricci is also dyslexic -- and spent more than $1,000 on books and for payment to a friend who recorded the books for him -- to study for a promotions test. Sotomayor was a member of an appeals court panel that upheld a lower court's judgment in favor of the city, which had thrown out results of a civil-service test when no blacks ...

Michael Bloomberg, Frank Ricci to Testify at Sotomayor Hearings

We have the witness list for the Sonia Sotomayor hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and a few names will ring a bell with people. Testifying for the majority, and presumably providing a favorable view of the judge, will be New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Major League Baseball pitcher David Cone, Louis Freeh, former Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Congressman Jose Serrano and Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.Testifying for the minority, meaning they'll give information that Republicans want public, will be Frank Ricci, ...
