Six Decades Later, FBI's Ten Most Wanted List Still Tough to Crack

WASHINGTON -- In the film "Take the Money and Run," Woody Allen played a bumbling, publicity-starved petty criminal named Virgil Starkwell. "You know he never made the Ten Most Wanted list," Starkwell's wife, Louise, lamented in the 1969 comedy. "It's very unfair voting. It's who you know." As Allen's fictitious character learned, getting on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list is no easy feat. Just being a vicious criminal or a menace to society isn't always enough. For one, there has to be an opening. And then there's the selection process: A committee at FBI headquarters reviews ...

Reward Unlikely for Ranger Who Helped Nab Fugitives

(Sept. 2) -- An Arizona forest ranger whose helpful tip led to the capture of a dangerous prison escapee and his accomplice may be prevented from receiving a hefty reward for his efforts. Officials from the U.S. Marshals Service and the privately run prison offered a $40,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch. Welch, who is both McCluskey's cousin and his fiancee, helped McCluskey escape from a state prison July 30 along with two others by tossing him wire-cutting equipment through a fence, The Arizona Republic reported. Welch and McCluskey, who ...

Ariz. Fugitive and Fiancee Arrested at Campsite

PHOENIX (Aug. 20) -- An unattended campfire and a suspicious forest ranger led to the arrest of two of the most wanted fugitives in the U.S., ending a three-week nationwide manhunt that drew hundreds of false sightings, authorities said. John McCluskey fled July 30 with two other inmates from a private prison in northwest Arizona and evaded authorities in at least six states before being caught Thursday evening just 300 miles east of the prison. Authorities arrested McCluskey, 45, and his alleged accomplice Casslyn Welch, 44, at a campsite in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in eastern ...

Fugitive First-Cousin Fiances John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch: Where Could They Wed?

(Aug. 10) -- John McCluskey, the last of the three Arizona convicts and murder suspects still on the run, is reportedly traveling with along with his accomplice, fiancee -- and first cousin -- Casslyn Mae Welch through Montana's Glacier National Park. Authorities think that the self-styled, modern-day "Bonnie and Clyde" may be headed for Canada and have warned that they are "armed and dangerous" and should not be approached. Whether they get there or not, there's reason to think our neighbor to the north would be the couple's ideal hideaway. Canada -- long an attractive destination for North ...

FBI's Ten Most Wanted List Turns 60

Remember those scary, grainy, black and white headshots of fugitives in newspapers and post offices? The FBI's "Ten Most Wanted List" is still around. But it's come a long way since its inception in 1950, and today is more likely to be viewed on television, digital billboards, social media, and other Internet sites. "We recognize the unique ability of the media to cast a wider net within communities here and abroad," said FBI Director Robert S. Mueller. "The FBI can send agents to visit a thousand homes to find a witness, but the media can visit a million homes in an instant." March 14 marks ...
