Dick Cheney to Be Subject of HBO Miniseries

Dick Cheney's been out of government for more than two years, but his political afterlife shows no signs of ending: HBO plans a miniseries on the famously abrasive former vice president. CNN reports that the project will be based on the "Frontline" documentary about Cheney, "The Dark Side," along with the Barton Gellman book, "Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency." No word from HBO on when the series will air or who will star, but it is expected to follow the former Wyoming congressman and defense secretary from his early years in the Nixon administration to his time as George W. Bush's ...

Julianne Moore to Play Sarah Palin: A Casting Choice as Divisive as Palin Herself

Julianne Moore to Play Sarah Palin: A Casting Choice as Divisive as Palin Herself

Tina Fey may be the most famous Sarah Palin impersonator, but the "30 Rock" star has some new competition. Julianne Moore has been tapped to portray Palin in HBO's upcoming film about the 2008 presidential race, "Game Change." The casting choice has provoked some surprisingly passionate responses. Says the Los Angeles Times' Nardine Saad: It's an interesting twist, casting an Oscar-nominated actress to play a politico who until recently was making a name for herself as a reality TV star. It's almost flattering that news that she'll be played by the classy redhead (Moore) broke soon ...

Could the Book 'Game Change' Stop John Thune From Running for President?

Could the Book 'Game Change' Stop John Thune From Running for President?

Because of a popular book, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) -- long assumed to be a likely 2012 GOP primary contender -- might be having second thoughts about running for president. As Politico recently reported, "His wife, Kimberley, read 'Game Change,' the blockbuster 2008 campaign book that revealed an array of candidate-spouse spats and depicted a brutal life on the campaign trail. " 'It was not helpful,' he joked, calling the book a 'downer.' " This was interesting to me, partly because just a couple days ago Mitt Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan that his wife wants him to run. Some may ...

Elizabeth Edwards' Harshest Critics: Are They Sorry Now?

Elizabeth Edwards' Harshest Critics: Are They Sorry Now?

On the day Elizabeth Edwards died, Time magazine's Mark Halperin eulogized her on "Hardball with Chris Matthews" as "one of the most public and valiant cancer survivors" he had ever known, an advocate who had used her spotlight to champion issues dear to her, including health care and gay rights. Movingly, Halperin described Edwards as an "incredible testament" to strength and courage and a mother who had worked to keep her family's life as normal as possible during the last days of her illness. In fact, unless you were one of the millions who read "Game Change," the '08 presidential campaign ...

Rielle, Oprah and Zen: America's Truth-Off

Rielle, Oprah and Zen: America's Truth-Off

Since the publication of "Game Change," the revelations of a sex tape and the alarming photo accompaniment to Rielle Hunter's GQ interview, we can safely say that dirt on the John Edwards scandal has entered an era of diminishing returns. America could handle the soap-worthy battle between a cancer-ridden wife and a wanton home-wrecker, but even the most salacious viewer knows that when the lady of the house takes off her pants and kneels next to the stuffed Elmo, it's time to pick up your toys and go home. ...

'Game Change' Fallout: Elizabeth Edwards' Popularity Drops

'Game Change' Fallout: Elizabeth Edwards' Popularity Drops

The popularity of John and Elizabeth Edwards (or, in his case, the unpopularity) in their native North Carolina appears to have taken a hit due to the unflattering portrayals of them in "Game Change," the behind-the-scenes chronicle of the 2008 presidential election by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Jan. 15-18. ...

The Cable News Patrol: Rounding Up the Usual Suspects and Subjects

The Cable News Patrol: Rounding Up the Usual Suspects and Subjects

Already, my life feels like it has been reduced to a cheesy Internet banner ad: "New York Man Watches TV at Home – And Is Paid for It, Just Like a Real Job." On Monday, I began my masochistic regimen of watching cable TV news for 12 hours a day in a valiant effort to...err...I dunno...maybe...probe the subterranean depths of the American political psyche. In truth, my motivation had something to do with frustration at being stuck at home recovering from Achilles tendon surgery (I told them that they could start the Trojan War without me). Perhaps others in my situation might be reading ...

In Fox Debut, Sarah Palin Calls 'Game Change' Charges 'Crap'

In Fox Debut, Sarah Palin Calls 'Game Change' Charges 'Crap'

In her first night as a paid contributor to the Fox News Channel, Sarah Palin spent most of her air time discussing "Game Change," a controversial new book by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin that casts many politicians, including Palin, in a bad light. But Palin partially confirmed one story in the book: that when she became John McCain's running mate, she thought the 9/11 hijackers might have had connections to Iraq. ...
