The law that prohibits federal recognition of their unions in under assault in the courts. The Obama administration has repudiated it and taken piecemeal steps to weaken its effects. AP This September 2010 picture provided by the family shows Tim Smulian, left, a South African citizen, and American Edwin Blesch outside the Au Petit Poucet restaurant in Val David, Quebec, Canada. They married in 2007 in South Africa. Because of the U.S. law barring ...
The Iowa House of Representatives approved a resolution on Tuesday that proposes a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in the state. Hundreds of people packed the Iowa State House to debate the issue -- known as House Joint Resolution 6 -- which passed by a 62-37 vote. One of the individuals who spoke was Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa engineering student and the child of a same-sex couple. His three-minute speech against the resolution is going viral across the Internet, much like Fort Worth, Texas, City Councilman Joel Burns' "It Gets Better" speech did during ...
(Dec. 6) -- A three-judge panel representing San Francisco's 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing oral arguments on the California state ban on same-sex marriage today. California voters approved Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment limiting marriage to a man and a woman, in the 2008 elections. The three-judge panel will evaluate whether a U.S. District Court correctly ruled that the voter-approved amendment is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. Today's oral arguments will take place in two hourlong sessions. The first hour will address issues. The second hour ...
WOONSOCKET, R.I. (Sept. 14) - Laure Rondeau, an 82-year-old Catholic, supports Providence Mayor David Cicilline for Congress because he wants to get the troops out of Afghanistan and says Washington is losing sight of what's happening to regular people. The sexual orientation of the openly gay mayor doesn't figure into her decision. "That doesn't bother me at all," Rondeau says. "He's been a good mayor of Providence, and I think he'd do well in Congress." Just three of the 535 members of Congress are openly gay, but two candidates hope to inch that number up to five this year: Cicilline, ...

"If you don't like gay marriage, blame straight people. They're the ones who keep having gay babies." That's the new virtual bumper sticker slapped onto my mother Frances' Facebook page. Frances, a lesbian, is unmarried for three reasons 1) it ain't legal -- yet; 2) she hasn't found an acceptable "mate"; and 3) because who the heck wants to get married nowadays anyway? I'm considering coming up with a commitment-phobe catch phrase of my own -- "Marriage is as marriage does." In nearly every state save Hawaii (one of the first to question the constitutionality of banning gay marriage in 1993) ...
(Aug. 12) -- In anticipation of U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling on whether gays and lesbians can immediately resume the practice of same-sex marriage, anticipated within hours, some couples have begun lining up to get a license at the first possible opportunity. Walker is expected to issue his ruling on whether to grant or deny a stay on same-sex marriage following his verdict that struck down Proposition 8, the amendment to California's constitution that denied gays and lesbians the right to marry. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, at least 15 couples arrived at San ...
WASHINGTON (Dec. 15) -- In a vote that sets up the first test of gay marriage in the U.S. Congress, the District of Columbia City Council on Tuesday voted to make same-sex marriage legal in the nation's capital. The 11-2 decision, the second of two decisions by the council, clears the way for Mayor Adrian Fenty to sign the bill into law. That starts a 30-day review period in Congress, but advocates expect the Democratic majority on Capitol Hill to allow the measure to become law in March. "We are on the verge of history," Councilman David Catania told a pre-vote rally Monday night. "Today's ...
(Dec. 3) - In the immediate aftermath of the passage of California's Proposition 8 last fall -- where voters amended the state's constitution to recognize only marriages between one man and one woman -- there was a lot of finger-pointing in the gay community, but no bloodletting. Leaders of all the major gay organizations kept their jobs, including the leader of the one organization dedicated to promoting gay marriage and the head of the leading gay rights group in the Golden State. Well, Patrick Sammon, head of Log Cabin Republicans, did announce his retirement, but he was resigning for ...
WASHINGTON (Nov. 5) -- Voters' stunning repeal of Maine's same-sex marriage law is forcing gay rights advocates to regroup and recalibrate their strategy. Legal experts say if other social movements are a guide, it should also teach them to be patient. "Every time people have had an opportunity to vote, they've voted it down," said University of Chicago law professor Gerald Rosenberg. "Is the [Supreme Court] really going to step in here?" On Tuesday, Maine became the 31st state where voters rejected marriage equality for gay couples through a referendum. The defeat -- the first time the vox ...
