If your pet mouse doesn't find the lady mice attractive, he could be lacking in serotonin. New research from scientists in China argues that the so-called happiness hormone plays a role in the sexual orientation of mice, the BBC reports. The study, published in the current edition of Nature, finds that male mice bred with brains unreceptive to serotonin lost their preference for female mice. The same was true for mice bred without the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 gene, which is necessary to produce serotonin. "This is the first time, to our knowledge, that a neurotransmitter in the brain has ...
WORCESTER, Mass. -- The NAACP's newly revived Worcester chapter elected a 28-year-old openly gay black man as its president this month. In New Jersey, a branch of the organization outside Atlantic City chose a Honduran immigrant to lead it last year. And in Mississippi, the Jackson State University chapter recently turned to a 30-something white man. Founded more than a century ago to promote black equality, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is seeing remarkable diversity in its leadership ranks - the result of an aggressive effort over the past four or five years ...
WASHINGTON -- The Marine Corps commandant who once said openly gay service members would be a dangerous "distraction" and was among the most outspoken opponents of repealing the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy said today he does not expect to lose troops over the change. "I haven't had any indication yet at all, not at all," Gen. James Amos told reporters when asked if he expected the mass exodus of troops that Sen. John McCain and other critics predicted if the ban was lifted. Amos was visiting troops in Afghanistan's Helmand Province when President Barack Obama signed the repeal ...
The bulldog-like mug of J. Edgar Hoover has long been synonymous with the FBI, a world-renowned law enforcement agency forever hyper-sensitive about its public image. Still, Hoover's legend has taken its lumps over the years. Now comes the latest: an upcoming movie directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover, in which the iconic G-man reportedly has a romantic affair with FBI Associate Director Clyde Tolson, his constant companion and alter ego. AP An upcoming movie directed by Clint Eastwood depicts FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's romantic affair with the ...
(Dec. 14) -- Those gay-themed books that were soaked with urine at a Harvard College library were not a hate crime after all, the school says, but a simple accident caused by a staffer who spilled a bottle of liquid waste on 36 tomes. Why a bottle of urine was sitting on a library shelf in the first place has yet to be explained. "This incident was initially reported as vandalism and characterized as a hate crime," Evelynn Hammonds, dean of Harvard College, wrote Monday on the university's website. "We have learned this morning that the books, while indeed damaged, were damaged by our own ...
"Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys," the title of a new Sundance Channel series my colleague Sarah Wildman wrote about yesterday, implies a sexual interest on the girl's part. After watching the first two episodes, I'm relieved that the relationships of the four starring couples depict close friendship, not frustrated desire. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to gay men almost by gravitational pull. I have found an affinity similar to what draws me to my girlfriends -- we like the same things, we laugh at the same jokes, we view the world through a similar prism, we get each ...
(Dec. 2) -- Leading to images of a dystopian future where men wander through smog-choked streets desperately trying to figure out whom to mate with (imagine the present with even more smog), Florida researchers have discovered that high levels of methylmercury may be creating large numbers of sexually confused white ibises and harming their rates of reproduction. "We knew mercury could depress their testosterone levels," University of Florida researcher Peter Frederick told the Daily Mail. "But we didn't expect this. In the worst-case scenario, the production of young would fall by 50 ...
(Dec. 1) -- The Smithsonian has removed a video from an exhibit on gay love at its National Portrait Gallery after conservative groups and lawmakers condemned the art as "hate speech" intended to offend Christians ahead of Christmas. Art historians and curators say the video, which depicts Jesus on a crucifix covered with ants, was created in 1987 as a statement about the universal suffering caused by AIDS. In the eye of some beholders, however, the exhibit, which features works from acclaimed artists like John Singer Sargent and Georgia O'Keeffe, is simple blasphemy. Some conservative ...
