Topless Feminists Protest 'Win a Wife' Competition

Topless Feminists Protest 'Win a Wife' Competition

A feminist group in Ukraine has protested a radio station competition to "win a wife" in the most eye-catching way possible -- by removing clothes. The Femen Movement is angered by a contest organized by a New Zealand radio station that offered a listener the opportunity to travel to Ukraine and meet women. Nine women protested in wintry Kiev by going topless and holding aloft banners that claimed "Ukraine is not a brothel" and "Welcome to hell." "Femen warns the lucky winner of the New Zealand competition that he can expect an unhappy ending in Ukraine," activist Olexandra Shevchenko ...

Women's Longer Lifespans Explained: Men Are 'Genetically Disposable'

Women's Longer Lifespans Explained: Men Are 'Genetically Disposable'

(Nov. 1) -- Women can credit their longer lifespans to genetic resiliency, says a new study that deems men to be "genetically more disposable" than the fairer sex. Us ladies tend to live five or six years longer than our male peers. In the United States, that means a woman's life expectancy is around 80 years, while that of a man is closer to 75. But surprisingly, the divergence between men's and women's relative life expectancy actually holds true in myriad locales around the world -- industrialized or not. Why? Experts still aren't sure, but an idea dubbed "disposable soma theory" is ...

Sex vs. the Internet: 12 Percent of Women Would Rather Stay Online

Sex vs. the Internet: 12 Percent of Women Would Rather Stay Online

(Oct. 27) -- The Internet is a glorious invention, but is it really better than sex? For most Americans, the answer is still a decided "no." But there is a subset of the population, at least, that would rather give up fun between the sheets than cascading style sheets, if forced to choose between the two. Meet the true webophiles: Surprise, more of them are women than men. Actually, that shouldn't be that much of a shock, given that a greater percentage of Web users are women anyway, and that's the way it's been for at least the past five years. Furthermore, women aren't using the Web just ...

Clarence Thomas' Wife to Anita Hill: Apologize

(Oct. 19) -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was narrowly appointed to the bench almost 19 years ago after a notoriously bitter confirmation process in which he was accused, but never found guilty, of sexual harassment by a former colleague named Anita Hill. His wife, Virginia Thomas, has never quite gotten past that ugly episode, it seems. Just last week, she reportedly left a voice mail on Hill's answering machine to the following effect, according to an ABC News investigative report: "Good morning, Anita Hill, it's Ginny Thomas," said the voice, "I just wanted to reach across ...

Dueling Toward Divorce: Study Links Couples' Fighting Styles to Breakups

(Sept. 29) -- Are you a scrapper or a sweet talker? Do you avoid conflict or embrace it? A new, long-term study concludes that how you fight with your mate might offer valuable insight into your risk of divorce. Surge Desk has the run-down: The Data on Differing Dueling Tactics The study, published this week in the Journal of Marriage and Family, is one of the longest and most comprehensive research explorations of marital conflict to date. Using data on 373 couples compiled over 16 years, starting at the first year of marriage, study authors at the University of Michigan evaluated how ...

Climate Change Skeptics and the Gender Gap

Climate Change Skeptics and the Gender Gap

In his second week in Copenhagen covering the climate change talks, the BBC's Richard Black posed a question on his blog: "Why are virtually all climate 'sceptics' men?" Well, not all of them, he goes on to say, but the most prominent ones (minus a few notable exceptions). "You might think it's a trite question," Black said. Not really, but go on. "It's a marked contrast to the world of mainstream climate science, which boasts a number of eminent female practitioners, including IPCC lead authors Susan Solomon and Cynthia Rosenzweig; and to the world of UN climate talks, where many ...
