We Might Be Martians: The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes

Planning on looking at your family tree? If you go back far enough in time, you might discover relatives who used to live on Mars. While that notion may seem a little far-fetched at first, don't laugh. According to MIT News, many scientists consider that life on Earth may be descended from organisms that arrived here from the red planet by hitching a ride on meteorites. To try to prove that theory, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard are developing an instrument that may offer some evidence. It's called the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes, or ...

Legends of Irish Giants Are More Than Tall Tales

Legends of Irish Giants Are More Than Tall Tales

Although the Irish legend of leprechauns is probably just a load of blarney, there's scientific evidence suggesting that the fabled stories of giants living on the Emerald Isle aren't just tall tales. According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, it seems that Northern Ireland is a hot spot for people with pituitary adenomas -- tumors that can cause the pituitary gland to pump out 50 times more growth hormones than normal, often leading to enormous growth spurts. Familiar with Ireland's folkloric history as a home to giants, researcher Dr. Marta Korbonits, a professor of ...

Mini Moos: Miniature Cattle Are Cash Cows for Breeder

Yes, good things often come in small packages. We brought you a lot of animal stories in 2010, but the year ended in a bang on a Colorado farm with the birth of a rare miniature panda cow. The calf, named Ben, arrived at the farm of Chris Jessen, but Ben's father, a 1,000-pound panda bull, was sold to Jessen by Richard Gradwohl, who developed and trademarked the panda cattle breed at his Happy Mountain Miniature Cattle Farm in Washington state. "We're the ones who developed the breed. The reason it's a panda is because it's a composite of eight panda breeds," Gradwohl told AOL News. ...

New DNA Test Can Detect Hair Color of Suspects

New DNA Test Can Detect Hair Color of Suspects

Scientists say they have developed a way to use DNA found at a crime scene to determine the hair color of a suspect. Researchers in the Netherlands identified 13 DNA markers from 11 genes that can help predict when a person has black or red hair with more than 90 percent accuracy and blond and brown hair with about 80 percent accuracy. Previously, only red hair could be detected by DNA sampling. The test will also be able to differentiate between blond and dirty-blond hair and red and reddish-brown hair. "That we are now making it possible to predict different hair colors from DNA represents ...

DNA Shows Newly Discovered Human Relative Roamed Widely in Asia

DNA Shows Newly Discovered Human Relative Roamed Widely in Asia

NEW YORK -- Scientists have recovered the DNA code of a human relative recently discovered in Siberia, and it delivered a surprise: This relative roamed far from the cave that holds its only known remains. By comparing the DNA to that of modern populations, scientists found evidence that these "Denisovans" from more than 30,000 years ago ranged all across Asia. They apparently interbred with the ancestors of people now living in Melanesia, a group of islands northeast of Australia. There's no sign that Denisovans mingled with the ancestors of people now living in Eurasia, which made the ...

Opinion: The Trouble With Home DNA Tests

(Dec. 20) -- Individually wrapped praline swirls. "Excellent." Funky striped knee-length socks. "Nice touch." And, right at the bottom of the stocking, a DNA test. "Oh. Santa, you really shouldn't have. ..." I mean, you really shouldn't have. Believe it or not, personal genetic tests -- which promise to reveal risks of future health conditions from pancreatic cancer to heart attack -- are being promoted as wonderful Christmas gifts this year. One U.S.-based company, 23andMe, is selling them at a knockdown $99 until Dec. 25. The website of another, DeCODEme, quotes a buyer saying this gift ...

Women's Longer Lifespans Explained: Men Are 'Genetically Disposable'

Women's Longer Lifespans Explained: Men Are 'Genetically Disposable'

(Nov. 1) -- Women can credit their longer lifespans to genetic resiliency, says a new study that deems men to be "genetically more disposable" than the fairer sex. Us ladies tend to live five or six years longer than our male peers. In the United States, that means a woman's life expectancy is around 80 years, while that of a man is closer to 75. But surprisingly, the divergence between men's and women's relative life expectancy actually holds true in myriad locales around the world -- industrialized or not. Why? Experts still aren't sure, but an idea dubbed "disposable soma theory" is ...

Liberal? It Might Be in Your Genes

Liberal? It Might Be in Your Genes

(Oct. 28) -- Political ideologies often seem ingrained within families. But our ideologies might start even before we're born, according to new research suggesting that behavior in the voting booth is affected by our biological roots. A collaborative effort by researchers at Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, has pinpointed a variant of the DRD4 gene that triggers left-leaning values. The particular genetic variant is implicated in receptors for dopamine, a neurotransmitter that affects how we handle emotion and perceive pain or pleasure. It's already been associated with ...
