Republican Nathan Deal, an attorney, was a Democrat when he was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992. He became a Republican three years later and went on to win a total of nine terms. He resigned in March to run for governor and picked up endorsements from Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee.

Democrat Roy Barnes is an attorney and former governor who lost to outgoing, term-limited Republican Sonny Perdue eight years ago. Barnes served eight terms in the state Senate from 1974-1990 and, after an unsuccessful run for governor, was elected to the state House where he served from 1992-98. He was elected governor in 1998.
