A University of Alabama fan stands accused of poisoning -- yes, poisoning -- 130-year-old trees at Toomer's Corner, a famous intersection where the Auburn University campus meets the town. A man was arrested in connection with the stunt, which first came to the public's attention after someone called into a sports radio show and claimed that he had poisoned the trees because of a long-standing Auburn-Alabama grudge. Soon after, officials confirmed that the trees had ...
(Sept. 16) -- "All war is based on deception," says a famous quote attributed to Sun Tzu, the renowned Chinese military strategist. So perhaps it's not surprising that as robots are being increasingly used in modern warfare, the Pentagon would want to teach them how to deceive the enemy. Now, military-funded researchers say they've developed an algorithm that allows robots to commit basic deceptions in a game of hide and seek. In a recently published paper, roboticists Alan Wagner and Ronald Arkin at the Georgia Institute of Technology say their work, which includes both simulations and ...
Kentucky guard John Wall was chosen as the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft today. He was selected by the Washington Wizards. Wall was the SEC Player of the Year last season. The Philadelphia 76ers selected Ohio State's Evan Turner as the second pick, while the New Jersey Nets snatched up Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors as the third pick. ...
LAKELAND, Fla. -- This time of year brings to mind what might have been for Austin Jackson. The Tigers outfielder played baseball and basketball in high school. His senior year, in response to critics who told him he should quit basketball to focus on baseball, he worked so hard at hoops that he earned a scholarship to Georgia Tech. Jackson had decided to forgo the scholarship after the Yankees drafted him in the gave him an $800,000 bonus, a record for an eighth-round pick. After several weeks in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, though, Jackson was having second thoughts. He said he left ...
Campuses all over the nation constantly struggle to maintain good relations with their host cities. It's mutualistic: colleges and universities provide innovation, technology and bustling life, while the town or city provides a temporary home for its students. The relationship gets tricky when the school and its community clash over campus issues. Generally it's something benign, like tensions over excessive noise and partying, and there's always the chance of crime on campus. While seemingly placid, problems with dining services can bring the campus to a boil. After all, college kids can't ...
A two-time draft selection at Georgia Tech, Luke Murton returned for his senior baseball season to enjoy the college experience and improve his draft status. The first has been accomplished and the second will be determined in next month's major-league amateur draft. At the moment, however, Murton and teammates are not happy campers. The Duke Blue Devils ruined the Yellow Jackets' extended stay in Durham, N.C., by winning two of three games and spoiling Georgia Tech's opportunity to win the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title and accompanying No. 1 tournament seed."We obviously didn't ...
Before March was mad, the ACC was already basketball crazy.Since 1955, the granddaddy of all conference tournaments has put one heck of an exclamation point on the end of the season, the twist ending to an Oscar-worthy film. Even in an era when six bids out of the league are as routine as Billy Packer ripping apart mid-majors or Mike Krzyewski having a colorful conversation with the referees, the ACC tournament still matters. And in 2009, the ACC tournament has a to-do list the size of Barack Obama's.There's the matter of which local team gets to play in Greensboro in the first round and which ...
When Paul Johnson was hired at Georgia Tech, he assured fans, players, recruits and the media -- and anyone else who'd list -- that he'd adjust his triple option offense to the ACC and throw the ball. With the departure of yet another Yellow Jacket wide receiver Johnson may not have any choice. Even if he wanted to throw the ball, there's no one to catch it. The latest pass catcher to leave, James Johnson, didn't blame the new offense as his reason for giving up his final year of eligibility. He simply said he was just tired of football. Tech's depth chart at wide receiver now includes one ...
Georgia Tech lost to Boston College Saturday night in part because they only managed to score 10 points. However, Demaryius Thomas was not part of the problem. The redshirt fresham did his part catching five passes for 68 yards. In addition to making plays, Thomas thinks he has the solution to the Yellow Jackets' problems. According to Thomas, "We're going to have do a better job with play calling." As you can imagine, Thomas' armchair quarterbacking and not so subtle dig at new Georgia Tech offensive coordinator John Bond did not go over well with Yelllow Jackets head coach Chan Gailey. ...
No slight intended against either Georgia Tech or Boston College. As a resident of Atlanta and a BC grad, I am glad that both teams have arisen to the top of the conference and this Saturday's game could be a preview of the ACC Championship Game. However, as a football fan and a defender of the ACC expansion, there is part of me that is a little disappointed. I like that BC and GT are playing well...what is bothersome is that no one else in the conference is. The marquee teams in the league (Miami, Virginia Tech and Florida State) all have quarterback problems. Maryland got run over by West ...
