Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! In the 21st century political arena, social media have transformed the dynamic of old-school politicians and their communications consultants. Not so long ago, political image advisers like Michael Deaver deftly used photo ops to show Ronald Reagan atop the Great Wall of China or filling sandbags after a Louisiana flood. James Carville helped chart Bill Clinton's path to the Oval Office by distilling an election message to "It's the economy, stupid." Less than a decade after that, Karl Rove was the architect of a Christian revolution in the Republican Party that carried George W. Bush to ...
Move on over, Oprah. There's a new media queen in town. In a feat that may have seemed impossible at the conclusion of 2009, Sarah Palin became an even more visible national personality in 2010. After she and Republican presidential nominee John McCain lost the 2008 election by some 8 million votes to Barack Obama and Joe Biden, it may have seemed that Palin would simply fade out of the national spotlight and return to Alaska politics. And when Palin abruptly announced in July 2009 that she was quitting her job as Alaska's governor, little more than two years after being elected, many ...
When Sarah Palin took the stage in Des Moines on Friday night to keynote the Iowa Republican Party's Reagan Dinner, she sent the clearest signal so far that she can see the White House from her home in Wasilla, Alaska. With C-SPAN covering her speech live, the former governor had a chance to woo not only Hawkeye voters who will be involved in the first nominating caucuses for 2012, but also a national audience curious about an intriguing figure's future. For someone who tries to follow and make sense of American political trends, the now-probable run by Palin provokes some questions: Have we ...
Shealah Craighead, Sarah Palin's personal photographer, has always known how to be a fly on the wall. The skill has paid off in hundreds of thousands of shots of the onetime governor of Alaska. The photographer has been traveling with Palin since the early days of her vice presidential bid and has followed her from there to the McCain concession speech to her book tour to the Daytona 500, documenting the political superstar's life along the way. Craighead has given AOL News an exclusive look at some of those photographs: Palin hugging fans, carrying a birthday cake to a staffer, reviewing ...
A funny thing happened on the way to the 2010 general elections in the United Kingdom: Personality began to matter. And the reason can be summed up in two words -- Nick Clegg -- leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats Party. Never heard of Nick Clegg? You're in good company. Neither had half of Great Britain before last week. That's when Clegg electrified a heretofore moribund campaign season with his dazzling performance in the first-ever televised debates between the three candidates for prime minister. Overnight, Clegg went from the guy that the other parties walked out on when he spoke ...
(March 4) - Sarah Palin's first book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," was a runaway best seller, so it's no surprise that the former Alaska governor and one-time vice presidential candidate already has a follow-up title in the works. ...
A single-issue glossy magazine promising "the untold story" of Sarah Palin has hit newsstands and convenience stories around the country, the Washington Post reports. Palin had nothing to do with the creation of the magazine, which boasts 100 pages of photos and purports to tell the former vice presidential candidate's story "in her own words." The magazine sells for $8.99 and will be on sale through the end of April. It is published by IMG, an international marketing firm, and Imagine That Publishing, which have jointly produced similar magazines on Michael Jackson, Michelle Obama, and the ...
Sarah Palin's fundraising committee spent $63,000 buying copies of her memoir, "Going Rogue," in November and December of last year, ABC News reports. Palin directed the committee to buy the books to send to donors. SarahPAC also spent $8,000 on "Going Rogue" bookmarks and $20,000 to send a photographer along on Palin's book tour. "Going Rogue: An American Life" sold a million copies in its first two weeks in stores. HaperCollins added an additional million to its initial printing of 1.5 million copies, sending 2.5 million into print from the start. Palin is not the first public figure to ...
(Dec. 29) -- The president is always under a microscope, so it's natural that he dominates the news throughout the year. That's especially true for the first year of a young president who was swept into office on the promise of change. But if anyone rivaled President Barack Obama this year when it came to making headlines and consistently eliciting strong reactions from all sides, it was the woman who hoped to be vice president. In many ways, 2009 was the Year of Sarah Palin. Hardly a day went by when Palin wasn't getting some kind of attention – for better or worse – on TV, ...
A Minnesota man has been arrested on suspicion of throwing two tomatoes at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin during a stop on her book tour. Jeremy Paul Olson, 33, is accused of hurling the tomatoes at the former vice presidential candidate from a second-floor balcony at the Mall of America outside Minneapolis on Monday, CBS News reported. Palin, who was signing copies of her book, "Going Rogue," at a Barnes & Noble store, was not hit. Two nearby police officers were struck by tomato fragments. Olson, from St. Paul, was arrested on charges of suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct. ...
