These glittering grills could become even more popular after Walter Davis, a New Orleans man allegedly shot in the mouth by his younger brother, was saved when the dental accessory stopped the bullet. Davis escaped with only minor gum damage and a cut upper lip because of his gold front teeth, the Uptown Messenger reported. The metallic chompers likely deflected the .22 caliber bullet his brother allegedly fired into his face from a Smith and Wesson revolver, giving new meaning to the expression good as gold. The brothers got into an argument on Feb. 7 after ...
LAS VEGAS -- The key difference between the tall yellow machine and the row of video poker consoles next to it is that the yellow machine will definitely give you something if you stick enough money in it. Still, the question remains: Is the small piece of gold that emerges from this rather unique vending machine actually worth the investment, or is it just another way to lose money in Vegas? The Gold to Go machine, billed as a "gold ATM," began dispensing seven different gold products Wednesday at the Golden Nugget Hotel-Casino, the second of its kind unveiled in the U.S. and the 20th ...
A gold nugget found in Northern California is going on the auction block in March -- and the rare find could fetch a high price. The nugget, which weighs nearly 100 ounces, was found in February near the town of Washington. The current price of gold would make that chunk worth about $135,000, but one expert, Fred Holabird, told The Sacramento Bee he thinks it's the largest remaining California nugget and could command $400,000. Holabird-Kagin Americana At the current spot value for gold, the so-called Washington Nugget, above, is worth $135,000. But due to its size and origin, ...
If 2010 taught us anything, it's that few people are able to accurately predict even the simplest events in the near-term future, let alone the big ones. From the price of gold, to unemployment, to Google Wave, prognosticators got more than a few major items wrong in their predictions lists. Here, in no particular order, are "10 for 10" -- 10 of the worst predictions of 2010. Paul Sancya, AP Newsweek, in its "Business Predictions for 2010," said unemployment would drop below 9 percent this year. Job growth will return "Unemployment Drops Below 9 Percent," Newsweek "business ...
(Nov. 8) -- He has been widely criticized for his role as a pitchman for Goldline, but Glenn Beck did have one thing right about gold: The precious metal is on the rise. Gold reached an all-time high of $1,410.30 an ounce today, after setting the record at $1,409.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, according to Reuters. Perhaps this is why the U.S. government is hoarding $300 billion in gold at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York and Fort Knox? "As long as [investors] feel like there is no other recourse except buying precious metals, gold is going to keep ...
(Oct. 29) – It's fashion week in Dubai and, boy, are the claws coming out on the runway. Earlier this week Emirati fashion designer Abeer Al Suwaidi introduced her latest eclectic collection of bold and colorful abayas, those long, robelike dresses worn by women in some parts of the Islamic world. Although Al Suwaidi is known for her risque take on the traditional garment, including sexy, tight "skinny abayas," her most pointed design debut this week came in the form of a strange and spiky accessory. (Oct. 19) -- Police say a camouflaged burglar found himself between a rock museum and a hard place. Gregory Liascos, 36, was arrested for allegedly attempting to break into the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Oregon last week while wearing a "moss suit" often favored by military snipers. According to NBC-2, Hillsboro police believe Liascos spent several nights trying to chisel through a wall and into a bathroom -- perhaps in an attempt to snatch the museum's quarter-million-dollar gold collection. ...
(July 19) -- All that glitters may not be entirely golden. Officials in Los Angeles and Santa Monica counties are launching an investigation into the business practices of Goldline International, a company that employs conservative politicians and pundits -- from Glenn Beck to Mike Huckabee -- as pitchmen to sell gold. As reported by ABC News, the investigation centers on pressure that Goldline is alleged to have put on customers to purchase limited-edition gold coins, whose value is much less than if the customers bought gold bullion instead. "There are two main types of complaints ...
Economic worries once again made gold a safe haven sought by risk-averse investors, driving the yellow metal to a new record high closing price of $1,248.70 an ounce. That was up $18.20, or 1.5 percent from Wednesday's settling price on the New York Mercantile Exchange, and it significantly overshadowed the last record close on June 8 of $1,245.60. The surge in gold prices came the same day the dollar fell and stock markets reacted with renewed volatility in response to news from the Labor Department that weekly claims for unemployment insurance unexpectedly rose, by 12,000 to a seasonally ...
(June 14) -- Until now, impoverished Afghanistan has been known for only two deadly exports: opium and terrorism. But according to new research by a team of geologists and U.S. defense officials, the country is sitting on top of $1 trillion in mineral resources and could become one of the world's most important mining centers, The New York Times reports. "There is stunning potential here," Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the U.S. Central Command, told the paper. "There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."
