Greek Deficit Shoots Up; Citigroup Trader Probed for False Speculation

ATHENS, Greece -- This country's 2010 deficit shot up significantly more than anticipated, European Union data revealed today, signaling ailing attempts by the government in Athens to rein in the country's runaway finances and avoid a painful debt makeover. At 10.5 percent of the country's gross domestic product -- well above the 9.4 percent forecast -- the Greek deficit ranked second highest in the European Union last year, according to a statement from Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency. Crisis-hit Ireland topped the list with 32.4 percent, while the U.K. ranked third with 10.4 ...

Greece Proposes Spending Cuts, but Will They Be Enough?

Greece Proposes Spending Cuts, but Will They Be Enough?

NEWS ANALYSIS ATHENS -- Greece was heading for bankruptcy last year. It still is today, only now, its chances of fiscal recovery look bleaker, pundits and market analysts predict. The reasons? Half-baked fiscal reforms, shortfalls in revenue and a state debt expected to explode to over 160 percent of its gross domestic product by 2013. This week alone the cost of insuring Greek government debt against default was so worrying that it hit a record on speculation that the Athens government was priming for a debt restructuring plan, the first by a Western state in 60 years. What's more, ...

Will Propping Up Portugal Halt Spread of Insolvency in Europe?

ATHENS, Greece -- Following Greece and Ireland, Portugal, too, has requested a bailout from its European peers. But will Spain, a larger economy with stronger significance to global finance, follow? And more important, has European aid done anything to solve what appears to be a growing solvency problem. In answering at least the latter question, financial gurus like Yanis Varoufakis, a professor of economics at Athens University, are emphatic: No. "From the onset of this crisis," he told AOL News today, "Europe's leading taskmasters have been behaving like compulsive gamblers, sinking more ...

Prosecutor: Greek Olympians Should Be Convicted in Doping Scandal

ATHENS, Greece -- A prosecutor here called today for the conviction of two former Greek sprinters for staging a motorcycle accident and then lying about it to avoid a doping test at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou, both medalists at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, are accused of fabricating the mishap hours after failing to appear for scheduled drug tests at the Athens Olympic Village in August 2004. The drama that surrounded Greece's premier Olympians cast a pall over the games' opening ceremony. Kenteris, the surprise Olympic gold medalist in the ...

Greece: Gadhafi Seeking Way Out, but Cease-Fire Must Come First

ATHENS, Greece -- After weeks of civil unrest, fighting and a rising death toll, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is making diplomatic overtures, seeking a way out of the crisis. Abdelati Obeidi, Libya's deputy foreign minister and one of Gadhafi's most trusted aides, flew to Athens over the weekend to push that agenda through Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou. It remained unclear, though, what guarantees the Libyan leader was seeking in exchange, such as assurances for his personal safety and commitments that he would not stand trial for waging brutal offensives against civilians. "All ...

Envoy Says Gadhafi Seeking End to Libya Crisis

Abdul-Ati al-Obeidi, a former Libyan prime minister who has served as a Gadhafi envoy during the crisis, will travel next to Turkey and Malta in a sign that Gadhafi's regime may be softening its hard line in the face of the sustained attacks. WikiLeaks: US Worried About Safety of Romanian Nuclear Plant

ATHENS, Greece -- As Japan struggles with the crisis at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, leaked U.S. diplomatic cables have focused a spotlight on another potential hot spot: the Cernavoda plant in Romania. Documents provided to Romanian media this week by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks indicate that U.S. officials are concerned about Romania's ability to cope with an accident at the facility. The cables, published Monday in the Jurnalul National newspaper, cast doubts on assurances made by the government in Bucharest that the Cernavoda plant has been operating with adequate ...

Protests Spike in Greece as Government Weighs Support of Attack on Libya

ATHENS, Greece -- Demonstrators took to the streets of the capital today to protest international air strikes against military assets of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as Greece weighed its support of the allied offensive. Toting anti-war banners and shouting slogans against the bombing raids, hundreds of leftist protesters -- mainly high school and university students -- gathered in central Athens, setting off on a protest march to the Parliament. Similar protests also took place on the island of Crete, where hundreds marched to the U.S.-controlled Souda Bay naval base, which provides ...

Illegal Immigrants in Greece End Hunger Strike

ATHENS, Greece -- Nearly 300 illegal immigrants have ended a six-week hunger strike after the Greek government, fearing the death of one or more protesters, agreed not to begin deportation proceedings against them.
