Opinion: Why Aren't Environmentalists Cheering Higher Gas Prices?

Opinion: Why Aren't Environmentalists Cheering Higher Gas Prices?

As gasoline prices continue to rise faster than station owners can update their signs, so too have calls to do something about the problem. Some Democrats are calling on President Barack Obama to uncork the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help ameliorate the pain at the pump. Republicans are renewing calls for more domestic oil production, including offshore. So where are environmental groups? Sure, they're talking about the need for new, clean energy supplies, but often in the context of how that will help lower gasoline prices. But why aren't they out there cheering on high gasoline ...

EPA Will Regulate Greenhouse Gases in Texas, Court Rules

EPA Will Regulate Greenhouse Gases in Texas, Court Rules

A federal court has shot down a bid by Texas to keep the Obama administration from regulating greenhouse gases in the Lone Star State. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled Wednesday that the Environmental Protection Agency can take over the permitting of carbon dioxide emissions in Texas, Politico reported. It was the third time in two months that the request by Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott was rejected in court. In December, the appeals panel agreed to stay federal enforcement regulations temporarily. That halt was lifted ...

EPA Announces New Greenhouse Gas Regulations

EPA Announces New Greenhouse Gas Regulations

Calling it a "common-sense approach" towards curbing greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced new regulations on emissions from power plants and oil refineries as a way to fight global warming. In a statement on the EPA's website late Thursday, administrator Lisa Jackson said the rules targeting "the largest industrial pollution sources" would go into effect next year under the Clean Air Act. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG [greenhouse gas] pollution that threatens the health and welfare of ...

EPA Moves Unilaterally to Curb Greenhouse Gases

WASHINGTON - Stymied in Congress, the Obama administration is moving unilaterally to clamp down on power plant and oil refinery greenhouse emissions, announcing plans for developing new standards over the next year. In a statement posted on the agency's website late Thursday, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson said the aim was to better cope with pollution contributing to climate change. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution that threatens the health and welfare of Americans," Jackson said in a ...

Opinion: Why We Need to 'Cool It' on Global Warming

Opinion: Why We Need to 'Cool It' on Global Warming

(Nov. 12) -- For 20 years now, we've been debating what (if anything) we should do about global warming, with very little to show for it. Despite grandiose pledges such as the 2008 promise by the Group of Eight industrialized nations to work to cut global carbon emissions in half by 2050, no meaningful international climate agreement has ever been reached and greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere are higher than they've ever been. What's holding us back? I blame polarization -- the lack of any middle ground in the climate debate. As far as many activists are concerned, you either believe ...

Two Decades Later, Hole in the Ozone Layer Still Not Fixed

Two Decades Later, Hole in the Ozone Layer Still Not Fixed

(Oct. 26) -- Fixing the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica was supposed to be environmentalists' finest hour. In the late 1970s, an insidious, commonplace group of chemicals (chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs) was discovered to be causing horrible damage to the ozone layer. Governments were informed, CFCs were banned in 1989, and the day was saved. Unfortunately, it's taking a little while. Lt. Nick Morgan, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps, spends his time in the South Pole, launching into the air balloons containing instruments that can ...

Opinion: White House Goes Solar; What About the Rest of Us?

Opinion: White House Goes Solar; What About the Rest of Us?

(Oct. 11) -- The commitment from the White House to go solar by the spring of 2011 is a significant statement that is fueling conversation around a much larger problem. Beyond the soon-to-be-installed solar panels at the White House -- which will heat water and provide electricity to the executive mansion -- lies a planet of aging commercial buildings. These buildings could form the vanguard of a sustainable, greener way of life if their owners took similar incremental approaches. The HVAC system, the lights, the water, the elevators, the power and cooling for technology, the heating and ...

Climate Scientists Urge Aggressive Action to Curb Global Warming

Climate Scientists Urge Aggressive Action to Curb Global Warming

In what's being called "the most comprehensive report ever on climate change," the National Academy of Sciences urged aggressive action to curb global warming, including a cap-and-trade program and taxes on carbon emissions. Three studies requested by Congress issued Wednesday provide the broad outlines for a national strategy to deal with climate change, The Los Angeles Times reported. Two more studies are still to come. Bold actions are necessary because "climate change is occurring, the Earth is warming ... concentrations of carbon dioxide are increasing, and there are very clear ...
