Civil Discourse Institute to Open in Tucson

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, who have joined forces in the past to head disaster relief efforts, are uniting again as honorary chairmen of a new National Institute for Civil Discourse. Formation of the institute, intended to promote compromise among opposing political parties and views, is being announced Monday in Tucson, Ariz., site of a shooting rampage last month that killed six people and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The new organization's director, Brint Milward, told the New York Times that the institute will focus on political ...

Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum: Throwing Punches Ahead of 2012 Battle?

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has made up with Sarah Palin over remarks he made earlier this week about her absence at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Santorum told reporters after speaking at CPAC Thursday afternoon that it's all good with Palin. "I've had exchanges with Sarah Palin not not for public record, and there is no problem between Sarah Palin and me on this issue," CNN's Political Ticker reported. "We are fine. No problem," Santorum said. "We've had exchanges" through an intermediary. Just last night the former Alaska governor had her claws out on national ...

Palin on Obama's 'Winning the Future': WTF Is a 'Spot On' Abbreviation

Sarah Palin says watching President Obama's State of the Union address was a "WTF" moment, in more ways than one. "His theme last night was WTF -- 'winning the future,' " she told Greta Van Susteren Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record." "I thought, okay, that acronym -- spot on. There were a lot of WTF moments throughout that speech." She called the president "disconnected," especially as reflected by his comments on jobs and the deficit. "That was a tough speech to sit through and try to stomach, because the president is so off in his ideas. . . . He believes government will ...

Essay: Haiti Needs More Than Sarah Palin's Determined Grin

Emily Troutman has been reporting on Haiti for AOL News since January. You can follow her updates on Twitter. CABARET, Haiti (Dec. 12) -- Sarah Palin, the erstwhile politician and potential candidate for U.S. president, was off limits to the media, except Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, for most of her visit to Haiti this weekend. But Palin finally spoke briefly at a news conference today. "Haiti has been a country that has suffered in the past and is going to continue to suffer until some fundamental changes are being made here," said Palin, who was accompanying the Rev. Franklin Graham, ...

EMILY's List Takes Swipe at Sarah Palin's 'Mama Grizzlies'

Sarah Palin has made "Mama Grizzlies" a campaign theme, but a Democratic women's group is growling back. EMILY's List, a national organization dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women to office, announced a new campaign, "Sarah Doesn't Speak for Me," on Monday. Its mission: To fight back against Palin's "radical agenda" and her endorsed candidates. In a press release, the group said: "Sarah Palin has predicted a rising tide of mothers and women voters will support her so-called 'Mama Grizzly' candidates. Today, we call upon women -- and men! -- to let their voices be heard and to ...

Illegal Immigration Foes Focus on 14th Amendment

(Aug. 4) -- A fourth senior Republican senator has called for a review of the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause as it pertains to children born to illegal immigrants in the United States. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) on Tuesday said he supports Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who announced last week that he is considering introducing an amendment that would deny citizenship to children of illegal immigrants. "We should change our Constitution and say that if you come here illegally and have a child, that child is automatically not a citizen," Graham said on Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox. ...

Clinton Presses Pakistan for bin Laden's Whereabouts

(July 20) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she believes Pakistani government officials know Osama bin Laden's whereabouts -- and she's pressing them for intelligence about the matter. Clinton, who visited Pakistan over the weekend, told Fox News host Greta van Susteren that she believes "elements" in the country's government know bin Laden's location and that of his top deputy, Ayman Al-Zawahiri. "If there were a terrorist somewhere in a remote place in the United States, some sheriff, some local state policeman, somebody in our collective government would probably know there was ...

Hair-Gate: Carly Fiorina Stands By Barbara Boxer Jab

Hair-Gate: Carly Fiorina Stands By Barbara Boxer Jab

In terms of political scandals, this one seems pretty minor. Yet, there's something about a woman making fun of another woman's hair style that is, to borrow California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina words, "Sooooo yesterday!" On Wednesday, while having her make-up applied for an interview with CNN, Fiorina was caught on an open microphone mocking her opponent's locks. "Laura saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television today," Fiorina said, "and said what everyone says, God what is that hair. Soooo yesterday." Today, given the chance to step back from that remark, Fiorina declined. In an ...

Joran van der Sloot, Suspect in Natalee Holloway Case, Confesses to Murder in Peru

Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teen who disappeared five years ago during a vacation in Aruba, is again in the news. On June 7, the prime suspect in her presumed murder, Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot, was arrested in Chile after another woman, 21-year-old student Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramirez, was found dead in Lima, Peru. Security video shows Flores and van der Sloot entering his hotel room on May 30. Three hours later, he left alone. Soon after his arrest, van der Sloot confessed to murder. Perhaps in an attempt to get a sentence more lenient than the maximum 35 years, van der Sloot ...

Why Does Suspect Keep Talking in Holloway Case?

Why Does Suspect Keep Talking in Holloway Case?

(March 3) -- Investigators aren't paying much attention to a newly released confession by Joran van der Sloot, a longtime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. But what would motivate him to talk to the media -- and to feed the press such contradictory accounts? "Joran is a spoiled, arrogant, cocky fellow who is confident the law will never touch him because it hasn't," criminal profiler Pat Brown told AOL News. "He likes the power he has to enthrall people with his tale and manipulate them into believing what he says is true, especially because it isn't the truth." Holloway, 18, ...
