"I think it's an insult to the 9/11 families. It's another smack in the face," retired Deputy Fire Chief Jim Riches, who lost a firefighter son during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, told the Daily News. "Why would we give them money ahead of so many other worthy groups?" Tim Brown, a retired firefighter who was a first responder on 9/11, told the New York Post. SOMA ...
(Oct. 14) -- C'mon, Whoopi and Joy, is that any way to treat a guest? Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, two hosts on ABC's "The View," briefly excused themselves from the set today during a heated argument with Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly over the Park51 Muslim community center and mosque. During the argument, O'Reilly claimed that the planned Park51 is "inappropriate" because "a lot of the 9/11 families, who I know, say, 'Look, we don't want that, that shouldn't be there.' " (Have they seen the design sketches?) Luckily, one remark made by Goldberg during the incident is muted -- you'll ...
NEW YORK (Sept. 9) -- The imam behind a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero cautioned Wednesday that moving the facility could cause a violent backlash from Muslim extremists and endanger national security. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told CNN that the discourse surrounding the center has become so politicized that moving it could strengthen the ability of extremists abroad to recruit and wage attacks against Americans, including troops fighting in the Middle East. Lorenzo Bevilaqua, CNN / AP Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf appeared on "Larry King Live" Wednesday and told guest ...
(Sept. 8) -- After staying quiet while controversy swirled, the imam who wants to build a Muslim community center near the spot where the Twin Towers fell is finally speaking out -- saying he's moving forward with the project, is "awed" by the "furor" over it and is promising to "clearly identify" its financial backers. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf wrote an op-ed posted on The New York Times website late Tuesday saying that the "ground zero mosque" -- a $100 million planned YMCA-like community center with a swimming pool, classrooms and separate prayer spaces for Christians, Muslims and Jews -- ...
NEW YORK (Sept. 5) -- During the the inaugural worship service of a proposed "9/11 Christian Center at Ground Zero" on Sunday, evangelist minister Bill Keller slammed Islam and Mormonism as "lies from Satan." At the same time, Keller maintained that his project was not in opposition to the proposed construction of an Islamic community center two blocks away. "It's not an anti-mosque," Keller said of his proposed center, which would be the first physical church constructed by his online ministry, LivePrayer.com. "For lack of better terminology, it's an old-time Evangelistic center where we're ...
(Aug. 25) -- A New York man has been charged with attempted murder as a hate crime for "slashing" a cab driver with a knife "across the neck, and then on the face from his nose to his upper lip." The man, 21-year-old Michael Enright, was visibly drunk. Police say he asked the driver if he was Muslim and, some time after the driver answered yes, attacked the driver while shouting, "Assalamu alaikum -- consider this a checkpoint!" The driver, 43-year-old Ahmed Sharif, escaped and flagged down a police car. Sharif was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. Some observers, ...
(Aug. 23) -- Amid all the blood-curdling protests over the so-called ground zero mosque, a song that's quite blood-curdling in its own right has hit the Net. Since it debuted on Fark.com, the video for "We've Got to Stop the Mosque at Ground Zero" by Trade Martin has racked up nearly 100,000 hits and has been called "the worst song in the history of recorded music" by hundreds of commenters. My friends, I beg to differ. What we have here is the finest example of contemporary political satire ever created, the likes of which rival anything Christopher Guest or Trey Parker and Matt Stone ...
NEW YORK (Aug. 20) -- The proposed Islamic center near ground zero is facing stiff opposition from a group that will be vital if the plan is to be realized: the New York City building industry. Construction worker Andy Sullivan has set up a "Hard Hat Pledge" on his website, calling on construction workers to vow not to do work on the Park51 community center and mosque, the New York Daily News said. Diane Bondareff, MCT Mosque opponent Andy Sullivan stands outside the site of the proposed mosque and Islamic center on Park Place near lower Manhattan's ground zero on Thursday. Sullivan is ...
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Aug. 18) -- Despite criticism from Republicans and others, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he has "no regrets" over the comments he made about the right of Muslims to build an Islamic center near the former site of the World Trade Center in New York. Obama's latest comment was in response to a question shouted by a reporter as he was leaving a townhall-style meeting on the economy in Ohio. The president inserted himself into the debate over the proposed Islamic center, which includes a mosque, when he said last week Muslims "have the same right to practice their ...
(Aug. 17) -- "It's a finger in the eye to New York," says Fox News radio host Laura Ingraham of the hotly debated plan to construct a mosque and Islamic cultural center two blocks from ground zero -- but a trip to the video archive shows she didn't always feel that way. Ingraham, whose new book "The Obama Diaries" is currently a New York Times best-seller, is one of the many commentators across the political spectrum to voice a strong opinion on the story that has become a microcosm for religious tensions in New York City and the U.S. As flagged by the self-appointed Fox watchdog blog News ...
