Rough Waters Remain for Louisiana Seafood

Rough Waters Remain for Louisiana Seafood

In a few places in southern Louisiana's Barrataria Bay and Bay Jimmy, oil still sheens from the marshes. That shimmer, and the areas around them still closed to fishing, serves as a reminder for all fishermen in the Gulf Coast of the challenges they face in the coming years. The BP oil spill, which began a year ago today, dealt a massive blow to an already stressed industry, and as the region gears up for shrimp season, nothing is certain. Acy Cooper, head of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, doesn't expect lowered yields for this year's harvest. Lots of adult shrimp got away last year when ...

Dangerous Thunderstorms Roll Into the East and South Today

Dangerous Thunderstorms Roll Into the East and South Today

Dangerous thunderstorms will spread into large portions of the East and South today and tonight, with the threat of damaging wind, large hail and isolated tornadoes extending from western New England to the Gulf Coast. The new storms are associated with the same storm system that produced tornadoes in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend. The most widespread severe weather will occur from later this afternoon through this evening, when unseasonable warmth in advance of the storm -- part of the fuel for the thunderstorms -- will reach its peak. While the possibility of isolated tornadoes ...

Mother Uses Her Body to Shield Children From Bullets

Mother Uses Her Body to Shield Children From Bullets

When a shower of bullets started spraying her house Sunday night, Chanelle Johnson's mothering instincts kicked in. She threw herself on top of her three children, all younger than 6. Another mother in the house similarly protected two more children. Johnson's house was one of three hit when two carloads of unidentified shooters let more than 40 bullets fly in the Thonotosassa section of Hillsborough County, which sits about midway down Florida's Gulf Coast. "You've got to protect your babies," Johnson told WFTS-TV. She was so shaken after the incident, she wouldn't show her face to the ...

Storm System Moving Across US Brings Threat of Tornadoes, Flooding

Spring storms are notorious for producing a wide array of dangerous weather, ranging from powerful thunderstorms and flooding rain to heavy snow, and a spring-like storm system moving out of the Plains and through the East will produce some of each today and Friday. Tornadoes are a threat for eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee through tonight, according to the federal government's Storm Prediction Center. But thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will occur over a much larger area, as far west as eastern Oklahoma and eastern Texas ...

BP's Fund Czar: Gulf OK by 2012, Except for Oysters

BP's Fund Czar: Gulf OK by 2012, Except for Oysters

WASHINGTON -- With the exception of oysters, the Gulf of Mexico will recover by the end of 2012, according to an evaluation of environmental and economic conditions made by the administrator of BP's $20 billion compensation fund. But oysters could take six to 10 years to recover to pre-spill levels. The Gulf Coast produces two-thirds of the nation's oyster harvest. That assessment will be used by Kenneth Feinberg, the fund's administrator, to determine how much to pay to settle final claims by fishermen, shrimpers, motel owners and other businesses affected by the spill. Spill victims ...

Massive Winter Storm to Sweep Much of Nation This Week

Massive Winter Storm to Sweep Much of Nation This Week

In a winter that's becoming known for powerful storms, the one that's about to form might be the most impressive yet in terms of size and scope -- affecting much of the eastern two-thirds of the country during the first half of the week. Heavy snow, ice, rain, thunderstorms and bitter cold will occur along the storm's path, with the likelihood of widespread travel interruptions, power outages and property damage. The storm might even reach blizzard strength in the upper Midwest, including Chicago, from Tuesday into Wednesday. The storm has yet to become organized, but the ingredients will be ...

Here Comes More Snow, From Deep South to New England

Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect from the Deep South to New England for another significant winter storm system, one that will spread snow, sleet, rain and strong thunderstorms along its path during the next couple of days. Snow amounts might reach a foot in the hardest-hit areas in the mountains of West Virginia, northwestern New Jersey, southeastern New York and southern and eastern parts of New England, including Boston, Hartford and Providence. The major cities farther to the south along the Eastern Seaboard will be spared the highest accumulation of snow, but even there, ...

Volunteers Descend on Gulf to Restore Oyster Beds

MOBILE, Ala. -- Volunteers from across the country are rebuilding oyster reefs along the Gulf of Mexico's delicate shoreline, hoping to revive oyster beds under assault for decades from overharvesting, coastal development, pollution, and most recently the BP oil spill. The waters harbor much of the world's last remaining productive natural oyster beds, but BP PLC's April 20 oil well blowout dumped millions of gallons of crude into the Gulf and dealt yet another blow to the once bountiful habitat. This weekend, volunteers descended on Mobile Bay with 23,000 bags of oyster shells aimed at ...

Big Weekend Storm Coming, But Path of Heavy Snow Uncertain

Big Weekend Storm Coming, But Path of Heavy Snow Uncertain

(Dec. 7) -- With a deep snowpack already in place in the Northwest and northern Rockies, snow accumulating by the foot near the Great Lakes and cold air as far south as Florida, winter has started quickly this year. A potent storm this weekend will add to winter's early fury. The path of the storm's heavy snowfall is far from certain, but the extent of the cold to follow will match or exceed the current cold snap in the eastern half of the country. Nam Y. Huh, AP B.W. Yoo clears snow in the Chicago area on Sunday. Depending on how a big weekend storm tracks, Chicago could be in for heavy ...
