Greenpeace Occupies Rig in Arctic Drilling Protest

ANKARA, Turkey -- Greenpeace activists climbed aboard an oil rig off Istanbul on Friday in a bid to prevent it from reaching Greenland to begin deep-water drilling in the Arctic, but the vessel continued on its course undeterred. The environmental group said eleven activists, some in rock-climbing gear, used speedboats to intercept and then climb atop the Leiv Eiriksson at dawn, after it had left a port in Istanbul. They climbed the rig's derrick, unfurling a banner that read: "Stop Arctic destruction" and "Go Beyond Oil, Choose Clean Energy." Greenpeace / AP Greenpeace activists ...

Teen Helps Save Fishing Buddies When Boat Capsizes

One man died and three were rescued when their fishing boat capsized off the coast of Tarpon Springs, Fla., on Saturday. Fifteen-year-old Dustin Bush, the youngest of the group, helped save two of the men and tried desperately to keep the third, 55-year-old Rick Green, from drowning. According to authorities, the four anglers from the Gulf Harbors Fishing Club had gone for a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico on a 22-foot fishing boat at 7 a.m. That afternoon, they were about 11 miles off shore when water conditions began to get choppy and they decided to head back. However their motor ...

Science May Be Murky in the Gulf for Years

Science May Be Murky in the Gulf for Years

Oil is still in a few places in the Gulf, but for the most part it looks pristine. Anecdotal evidence indicates a rapidly recovering area -- escaped crude oil itself is scarce, and regular tests by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have yet to reveal any tainted seafood. But the Gulf of Mexico and its coastal wetlands are vastly complicated ecosystems. Scientists had incomplete information on them before the BP oil spill a year ago today, and it will be years before they can start to draw conclusions about the impact of the millions of barrels of oil that spewed into the ...

Oil From BP Spill Found on Dead Dolphins in Gulf of Mexico

Oil From BP Spill Found on Dead Dolphins in Gulf of Mexico

Researchers have traced oil found on dead dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico to the BP Deepwater Horizon spill but say it's not yet clear whether the oil caused their deaths. Hundreds of bottlenose dolphins have washed up dead in the Gulf in the past year, an unexplained rise in deaths that has scientists concerned. Oil on six of the dolphins has been directly linked to BP's blown-out well, but researchers say it's too soon to conclude whether or not the oil was responsible or if their demise was caused by something entirely unrelated, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. ...

More Dangerous Tornado Season Expected This Year

More Dangerous Tornado Season Expected This Year

The 2011 tornado season has started quickly, with more reports of damage from storms and twisters in the past two days than there were during all of the first two months of 2010 -- a trend likely to continue well into spring. Severe weather season, as it's often referred to by meteorologists, typically peaks during May, when meteorological conditions that lead to the development of dangerous thunderstorms are most abundant. These conditions -- including a sharp north-south temperature gradient -- have emerged early this year and, based on the expected weather pattern, will likely intensify in ...

US Approves First Deep-Water Well in Gulf of Mexico Since BP Spill

NEW YORK -- The U.S. has approved the first deep-water drilling permit in the Gulf of Mexico since last year's massive oil spill. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement announced Monday that it issued a permit to Noble Energy Inc. to continue work on a well about 70 miles southeast of Venice, La. Noble started drilling the well four days before the Deepwater Horizon exploded. Drilling activity was suspended on June 12 under a moratorium the U.S. placed on exploration in waters deeper than 500 feet. No new deepwater permits had been issued since the moratorium was ...

US Judge: Spill Claims Czar Not Independent of BP

NEW ORLEANS -- The administrator of the $20 billion compensation fund for Gulf oil spill victims is not independent from BP and must stop telling potential claimants that he is, a federal judge said in a ruling Wednesday that may spur more people to sue rather than settle. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said claims czar Ken Feinberg and any of his agents must change the way they communicate with people seeking money from the fund. The ruling came just hours after Feinberg released details on how final payments would be determined. The ruling cuts at the heart of one of Feinberg's central ...
