KDVR-TV is reporting on its website that the boy is being treated for attention deficit disorder, and was told to draw such pictures by his therapist. His parents and the therapist say that the drawing was not a threat and that the boy would never hurt anyone. ...
Back-to-back appearances this week by President Barack Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie put a fascinating spotlight on two opposite styles of leadership. Christie is the self-styled bull crashing through the china shop. Obama is the deliberative shopper who threads his way through the narrow aisles and tries to keep breakage to a minimum. In their manner and appearance, the pair could not be more of a contrast. Christie, a former prosecutor, is large and blunt, with "a little Jersey attitude," as Henry Olsen, vice president of the American Enterprise Institute, put it Wednesday. ...
Nebraska state Sen. Mark Christensen has drawn fire from critics for his proposal to let principals and teachers carry concealed handguns as a way to keep violence out of the schools. Christensen introduced in the state Legislature a bill that would allow school administrators and security personnel to carry the weapons, as long as they have a permit to do so. The legislation came in the aftermath of the Tucson, Ariz., tragedy and the Omaha, Neb., school shooting earlier this month. According to the legislation, proposed last month, each school board would need to approve the measure by a ...
WASHINGTON -- Surviving the deadliest shooting massacre in U.S. history wasn't enough to make Colin Goddard an advocate for stricter gun laws. Only when he watched another rampage play out on TV two years later did the Virginia Tech graduate realize he had to speak out. "That took me back to the day like none other," Goddard said of another troubled gunman who killed 14 at an immigration center in Binghamton, N.Y. "I was watching the body count rise and I was like, this is just the same stuff that is happening to another family now. ... I was like, I've got to get involved. I've got to do ...
(Dec. 13) -- More guns in Mexico's bloody drug wars can be traced to Texas than to any other state, according to The Washington Post. The newspaper found that Texas is the leading source of guns that end up in the hands of violent Mexican cartels, and that the city of Houston -- which alone has 300 gun retailers -- is the top seller of those guns in the state. Of the 12 top U.S. dealers of weapons seized by Mexican authorities since 2008, eight are in Texas, three are in Arizona and one is in California, according to The Post. It's long been known that weapons from the United States, where ...
(Sept. 7) -- A bloody, drug-fueled war is being waged just across the border in Mexico and a report out Tuesday finds that 90 percent of the guns traced from Mexican crime scenes since 2006 have originated in the United States. The report was released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group of more than 500 mayors from American towns and cities, and was based primarily on data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The new findings reinforce previous estimates while contradicting claims made last year by several news organizations, including Fox News and the Examiner, ...
(July 19) -- No matter what name you call your deity, there's a common theme among religious institutions in the land of Louisiana: You cannot trust your fellow man, not even in the House of God. Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law a bill that could easily be mistaken as satire: Concealed handguns are now a go in places of worship. House Bill 1272, known has the "gun-in-church bill," was introduced by Rep. Henry Burns, R-Haughton. The new law allows licensed gun owners who are part of a security force to carry concealed weapons into churches, mosques and synagogues. Those who wish to pack ...
(July 13)--After winning recent battles in the courts and Congress, the National Rifle Association is looking to influence more than narrow gun issues, The New York Times reports Tuesday. Some examples: In the health care debate this year, for instance, the NRA's lobbyists worked with the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, to include a little-noticed provision banning insurance companies from charging higher premiums for people with guns in their homes. The NRA worked out a deal last month exempting itself from a proposal requiring groups active in political spending to disclose their ...
(June 29) -- Monday's Supreme Court decision upholding individual gun rights is the latest development to challenge the notion that the Second Amendment is a target for the Obama administration. In fact, one commentator says, the last couple of years have been a "gun rights renaissance." Even before he was elected, some opponents warned that Barack Obama would be the "most anti-gun president in American history." Conservative blogs and talk shows stoked fears that he intended to disarm law-abiding citizens. When a woman at a 2008 Obama appearance in Pennsylvania asked him about the rumors, ...
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said a deal aimed at giving the District of Columbia congressional voting rights has fallen through and will not be worked out before the end of the year. As late as Monday, Hoyer and other congressional leaders had planned to move a bill to the House floor that would give the District of Columbia a vote in Congress. The district is currently represented by a "delegate," rather than a full-fledged member of Congress, who cannot vote on bills in the chamber. Democrats had agreed to Republican demands for another congressional seat in Utah, which would ...
