Casey Anthony's Attorneys Want Evidence Suppressed

Casey Anthony's attorneys asked that several key pieces of evidence, including statements Anthony made to police, not be permitted at her trial for the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, as a motion hearing continued for the third day today in an Orlando, Fla., courtroom. Anthony is scheduled to go on trial May 9 on a first-degree murder charge. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death. Testimony today centered on two pieces of evidence that Anthony's defense team does not want admitted: letters between Casey and a jail pen pal, and evidence of chloroform that was allegedly found ...

Study: Want to Hear the Music? Turn Down the Volume

For most of us, life would be far less enjoyable without music, any kind of music, regardless of the tune, instruments or voices involved. But whether it's rock, classical, hip-hop, heavy metal or something in between, when played too loudly, repeated exposure to music can cause permanent hearing loss and ringing in the ears, or tinnitus. "Once you have hearing loss, music will never sound the same; ringing in the ears will rob you of the sound of silence," Thais Morata, a federal research audiologist, writes in her science blog posted today on the National Institute for Occupational Safety ...

Her daughter puts on a "brave face" but is worried about her future, Edda Mellas said this morning on NBC's "Today" show. Hearing Loss Up 30 Percent in American Adolescents

(Aug. 17) -- Teens might be wise to listen up when parents ask them to turn down the volume. According to a new study, American adolescents are suffering significantly more hearing loss than they were 30 years ago, and one in five now have a problem. A team of researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital evaluated two nationally representative surveys, from 1988-1994 and 2005-2006, which included data on youth age 12 to 19. From 1988 to 1994, about 15 percent of youth suffered some degree of hearing loss. That spiked to 19.5 percent in the more recent survey -- a 30 percent increase. Most of ...

Gen. Petraeus Chokes, Passes Out At Emergency Afghanistan Hearing

WASHINGTON (June 15) -- A Senate hearing on Afghanistan was adjourned until Wednesday after Gen. David Petraeus began choking and had to leave the hearing room apparently suffering from dehydration. The head of U.S. Central Command was being questioned by Sen. John McCain when he slumped over at the witness table. His head was down just a short time and he appeared to be choking as he was quickly surrounded by aides. Moments later, Petraeus walked out of the hearing room on his own. A few minutes later, Sen. Carl Levin, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the general ...

Afghanistan Emergency Hearing: Levin Calls Latest News

WASHINGTON -- The military's top leader in charge of Afghanistan has been summoned to a hastily arranged Senate hearing to explain to lawmakers recent setbacks in the operation there and what he intends to do about it. But before Gen. David Petraeus gets his turn, Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin opened the hearing with a litany of "largely negative" developments in Afghanistan. Noting it's been one year since Gen. Stanley McCrystal took command there, Levin said the news has been unfailing bad: increasing casualties, the Taliban's return to Marja after U.S. forces heralded the ...

Geithner Tells House Panel A.I.G. Rescue Prevented Depression

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told members of a House oversight committee that the government had acted "in the best interests of the American people" when it bailed out American International Group last year, the New York Times reports. Geithner said Washington's intervention had helped prevent a "second Great Depression." The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called Geithner and former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to explain how Goldman Sachs ended up with a chunk of the $85 billion that the New York Federal Reserve had marked as a rescue loan for A.I.G in September ...

Senators Examine Constitutionality of Obama's 'Czars'

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) made good on his promise to hold hearings on the constitutionality of President Obama's "czars." In a Tuesday afternoon hearing on the Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, of which Feingold is chairman, the senator worked through a list of criticized nominees whose un-approved appointments he believes may circumvent the Senate's advise-and-consent role. The administration did not send a representative to the hearing, but sent a three-page letter detailing the positions of the 18 appointees under examination. ...
