US May Send Drone Chopper to Help Japan With Crippled Nuke Plant

Cleanup work at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant presents a radiation risk to many workers, even helicopter pilots flying over the complex. One partial solution could be an unmanned aircraft capable of carrying 6,000 pounds of cargo -- in this case, water -- to help tame the crippled facility. "The U.S. Navy is currently exploring the possibility of deploying assets to provide humanitarian assistance to the government of Japan," Marcia Hart-Wise, a U.S. Navy spokeswoman, told AOL News, in response to a question about the K-MAX, an unmanned helicopter developed by the Lockheed Martin ...

NYPD Helicopter Video Shows 9/11 Aftermath [VIDEO]

"Holy crap!" a man shouts, watching the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. A new 17-minute video of the twin towers after they were hit on Sept. 11, 2001, taken from aboard a New York Police Department helicopter, shows thick, black smoke billowing out into the Lower Manhattan sky. The video was posted by the website Cryptome, which says it publishes documents that are "open, secret and classified." In posting the video on YouTube, the group said the video was provided by NYPD to the National Institute of Standards and Technology for its trade center investigation. "Holy crap! ...

Libyan TV Shows Captured Dutch Helicopter Crew [VIDEO]

Libyan state TV today broadcast footage of a Dutch naval helicopter crew who were captured by pro-government militias while trying to evacuate European citizens from the conflict-torn country. Forces loyal to beleaguered dictator Moammar Gadhafi seized the three-member crew -- two men and one woman -- together with two evacuees near the coastal city of Sirte on Sunday. The evacuees, a Dutch man and a Swedish woman, were allowed to leave the country, but the aircrew is still being held at an unknown location. The Dutch Defense Ministry insists that the crew was simply carrying out a ...

Chilean President Lands Chopper on Busy Highway

Chilean President Lands Chopper on Busy Highway

Chile's billionaire president has cultivated a can-do image, piloting his own private helicopter and swooping in to hug 33 miners as the world rejoiced in their dramatic rescue last year. Sebastian Pinera's latest feat involved landing his chopper in the middle of a busy highway south of Santiago and shrugging off the emergency landing with characteristic swagger. "Came up short on fuel," he told a shocked police officer, with a smile. But not everyone was amused. Pinera's political foes are calling for an investigation into his impromptu landing Saturday. One opposition lawmaker, Camilo ...

Moscow's Super-Rich Turn Out for Millionaire Fair

Moscow's Super-Rich Turn Out for Millionaire Fair

(Oct. 26) -- Once a year, Russia's nouveau riche make even more of a public spectacle of themselves than usual. Never is their conspicuous consumption more conspicuous than it was at last weekend's Millionaire Fair Moscow, where the world's most unnecessary and overpriced wares are gathered for the ogling pleasure of a few hundred elite Muscovites. The sixth Millionaire Fair was held at the Moscow Manege, the Russian capital's most prestigious convention center, located in the middle of a public plaza adjacent to Red Square and the Kremlin. Fewer oligarchs were to be seen than in previous ...

4 Most Glaring Errors Cited by Obama's Oil Spill Panel

(Oct. 7) -- Scientists describe the official response to BP's Gulf of Mexico oil disaster as a giant science experiment carried out in real time since it was the first in U.S. history involving a deep-water oil rig. Yet the preliminary assessment released this week by the Oil Spill Commission, which was appointed by President Barack Obama back in May, does not look kindly upon the makeshift efforts of government officials or the U.S. Coast Guard. In response, the Obama administration defended itself for having "significantly mitigated the impact of the spill" by using all available ...

Navy Pilots Grounded After Double Helicopter Dip Into Lake Tahoe [VIDEO]

(Sept. 24) -- Two Navy pilots from San Diego have been grounded after their helicopters dipped into Lake Tahoe last week. The Sept. 13 incident was caught on a dramatic video, which shows the two choppers hovering just above the water. At one point, one of the $33 million aircraft seems to lose control and flip over into the lake, but the pilot manages to bring it back up out of the water. Both helicopters droped into the lake because they did not have enough power to stay in their hovering positions, Lt. Aaron Kakiel, spokesman for the Naval Air Forces command at North Island, where the ...

The Awesomeness That Is Chuck Norris Inspires Flugtag Racers

(Aug. 17) -- Chuck Norris has karate-chopped his way to being a martial arts champ and a successful actor. And if you believe a popular Internet meme, he is also the toughest man on the planet. Now, the former star of "Walker: Texas Ranger" may soon conquer the "flugtag." At least in spirit, because the actual work is being done by "Team Roundhouse," a group of five naval air crewmen who are part of the Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, Calif., in anticipation of the Red Bull Flugtag Race scheduled for Aug. 21 in Long Beach, ...

NATO Copter Shot Down in Afghanistan, 4 Americans Dead

(June 9) -- A NATO helicopter was shot down in southern Afghanistan today, killing four American troops near an area where U.S. military commanders and their allies are reportedly softening plans for an upcoming offensive, beefing up aid outreach instead of military might. The helicopter was brought down by hostile fire in Helmand province, NATO said. It didn't release the names or nationalities of the troops killed, but The Associated Press reported that those killed were Americans. Both U.S. and British troops operate in Helmand. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, ...

McCain Asks Obama About Pricey New Marine One

McCain Asks Obama About Pricey New Marine One

Not fair to call it a grilling, as they are pretty jovial at the start and finish, plus I like Obama's intro to inviting McCain in the question, and his disarming answer. But I think McCain was trying to score some points, burnishing his new image as fiscal warrior (remember that bank bailout you quit the campaign for senator?). Note that Obama said that he thought the old helicopters looked pretty good and that he had asked Secretary of Defense Gates to study the issue. Lockheed Martin dropped 5% yesterday. More background here. ...
