Police: Woman Hid 54 Bags of Heroin, Money in Her Vagina

Authorities in Pennsylvania arrested a 27-year-old woman who they say hid more than 100 items -- including 54 bags of heroin and loose change -- in her vagina. Investigators took Karin Mackaliunas into custody last weekend after she was involved in a motor vehicle crash, according to police in Scranton. Officers in nearby Dunmore heard about the accident and, suspecting that she had been involved in the recent burglary of a local inn, asked Scranton police to detain Mackaliunas for questioning. During a routine search, Scranton police Officer Nancy Baumann found three bags of heroin inside ...

Mike DeStefano Dead; A Tribute to the 'Recovery Comic' [VIDEOS]

Mike DeStefano, whose recovery from heroin addiction fueled his no-holds-barred comedy, has died from a heart attack. DeStefano, who was in his 40s, was born in the Bronx in New York, and according to his official bio, became a heroin user at the age of 15. Fifteen years later, he kicked his addiction and began working as a drug counselor. A spontaneous decision to entertain a crowd of fellow addicts turned into a full-fledged career in comedy. In addition to his appearances on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," "The Howard Stern Show" and "Comedy Central Presents," DeStefano was a featured ...

'War on Drugs' Gives Way to the Dangerous New Face of Narco-Politics

'War on Drugs' Gives Way to the Dangerous New Face of Narco-Politics

A shotgun blast of news this year shredded what most Americans believe about what used to be called the "war on drugs" -- that it was being fought to curb what were seen as simply criminal enterprises. Instead, it left us all facing the new dangers of narco-politics, whether it is cartels challenging governments and attacking social institutions, capitalizing on corruption, or involvement in the drug trade by terrorist groups. As a veteran California law enforcement officer told Politics Daily: "What we're seeing in Mexico is cartels as new 'state making' agencies." That's politics, even if, ...

Study: Alcohol More Lethal Than Heroin, Cocaine

LONDON (Oct. 31) -- Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new study. British experts evaluated substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole. Researchers analyzed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body, in addition to other criteria like environmental damage caused by the drug, its role in breaking up families and its economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison. Heroin, ...

Coke and Heroin Down, Amphetamines Up: The 2010 UN Drug Report

Coke and Heroin Down, Amphetamines Up: The 2010 UN Drug Report

The United Nations released its World Drug Report 2010 earlier this week, which reveals that cocaine and heroin use in the United States continues to decline but is being supplanted by amphetamines. In Europe, however, cocaine use continues to increase, and drug use is on the rise in the developing world. "Cannabis remains the world's most widely produced and used illicit substance: it is grown in almost all countries of the world and is smoked by 130-190 million people at least once a year -- though these parameters are not very telling in terms of addiction," the U.N. reported. In the past ...

Third-Grader Caught Giving Out Heroin at Pa. School

(April 14) -- Police in a Pennsylvania town would like to know how an 8-year-old boy came into possession of more than 60 bags of heroin, and why he brought them to his elementary school Tuesday. According to Wilkinsburg, Pa., police, when a teacher at Turner Elementary School asked a third-grader what he was carrying in his pockets, the boy produced 60 bags of a powdery substance that all bore the words "trust me." Another 18 empty bags were found in the classroom trashcan. Tests of the substance inside the bags revealed it was heroin, police said at a news conference today. At least ...

GAO: In Afghanistan's Counter-Drug Campaign, the Police Are a Problem

GAO: In Afghanistan's Counter-Drug Campaign, the Police Are a Problem

The other war in Afghanistan isn't going all that well, either. The Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, reports Tuesday that almost half of the new police recruits test positive for drug use. That's not good, considering that the police are in charge of the eradication of poppies, whose golf ball-size pods of sap are refined into raw heroin. At any rate, the number of police users and addicts is probably understated, according to the State Department. "Many recruits who tested negative for drugs have shown opium withdrawal symptoms later in their ...

Fighting the War in Afghanistan With Fruit

Fighting the War in Afghanistan With Fruit

(Feb. 14) -- Joining a growing movement toward resuscitating Afghanistan from the ground up, the Italian Provincial Reconstruction donated 240,000 cherry, almond, apricot and pear trees to Herat Province's department of agriculture. Italy's gift echoes the sentiments of other groups who are pinning hopes for the Afghan economy's growth on fruit. Only about 15 percent of Afghanistan's land is suitable for cultivation, but agriculture remains the driving force in the nation's economy. Three decades of war following the Soviet invasion in 1979, however, have taken a tremendous toll on food ...

NYC-Funded Handout Called How-to for Heroin Users

NEW YORK (Jan. 3) - A New York City-funded guidebook for heroin users offers information on how to prepare drugs carefully and care for veins to avoid infection. The state's top official with the Drug Enforcement Administration calls the "Take Charge Take Care" guide a "step-by-step instruction on how to inject a poison." DEA special agent-in-charge John Gilbride says the handout is disturbing. The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene printed about 70,000 copies. A health official says the goal is to promote health and save lives. Assistant Commissioner Daliah Heller says ...

Mexico Decriminalizes Pot, Cocaine and Heroin

Mexico Decriminalizes Pot, Cocaine and Heroin

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has signed into law a bill passed by the country's congress last spring. The new measure decriminalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamines and heroin, setting limits for what constitutes "personal use" quantities. At the same time, it provides free treatment for those with drug addiction. The hope is that the law will distinguish casual users from addicts. Before, those arrested for drug possession -- even for small amounts -- were handed long jail terms. Studies show that drug use is on the rise in Mexico, calling into ...
