Hispanic Population Passes 50 Million in US but Raises Question

WASHINGTON -- The Hispanic population topped 50 million for the first time, new census data shows, as Latinos became the second-largest population group in the United States. The Census Bureau today released its final numbers for the 2010 census, which show how rapid growth of the Asian and Hispanic population dramatically transformed the U.S. into a more ethnically diverse country than it was 10 years ago. The swelling Hispanic population made up more than half the 27.3 million increase in population in the U.S. since 2000. While the nation's population grew by 9.7 percent in the past ...

Black Americans More Optimistic Than Whites About the Economic Future

Black Americans More Optimistic Than Whites About the Economic Future

While white Americans are more satisfied with their own financial situation than blacks after the long economic downturn, blacks are significantly more optimistic about what the future holds for them and the economy, according to a Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation/Harvard University poll conducted Jan. 27 – Feb.9. (Story; Poll Data). There was also a significant divide in how whites and blacks rated President Obama's economic policies, with whites taking a far dimmer view than blacks. Sixty percent of whites said they were satisfied with their own personal financial situation, ...

Susana Martinez, Marco Rubio and the New Latino Leadership

Susana Martinez, Marco Rubio and the New Latino Leadership

Out of the historic victory of a surprising number of Hispanic Republican candidates in the midterms two weeks ago, a new political profile of Latino leadership is taking shape, and it runs counter to the dominant liberal and pro-Democrat image. After the remarkable electoral shakeup of Nov. 2, the time seems ripe for this sort of turnover -- time to reset shopworn ideas and cast out old images. New Hispanic leaders with a different bent of mind would seem primed to fill a vacuum at the helm of the nation's 47 million Hispanics. According to a recent Pew Hispanic Center survey, most Latinos ...

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

(Oct. 26) -- We all know the stereotypes: Opponents of marijuana are people with short hair, khaki pants and light skin who like a good amount of mayonnaise on their white bread, and supporters are... pretty much everyone else. But in California, as everywhere else, the racial lines are blurry, and old stereotypes might prove a poor predictor of how the various populations in the nation's largest, most diverse state will vote when it comes to Proposition 19. As November draws near, there are increasing signs that race will play an important role in the upcoming vote on whether to legalize ...

Univision Refuses to Air Ad Urging Hispanics Not to Vote

Univision Refuses to Air Ad Urging Hispanics Not to Vote

A conservative Hispanic group hoping to get Latinos to stay home on Election Day won't be getting its message out on Univision. The Spanish-language network said Tuesday it would not air an ad from the GOP-led Latinos For Reform that has a blunt message: "Don't vote." "Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting," Univision spokeswoman Monica Talan told Politico. "Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote." The minute-and-a-half-long spot argues that by staying away from the ...

Loretta Sanchez and Van Tran: Ethnic Flare-up Roils California House Race

Loretta Sanchez and Van Tran: Ethnic Flare-up Roils California House Race

ORANGE, Calif. -- Rep. Loretta Sanchez was a powerful symbol of Latino pride and empowerment when she ousted conservative veteran Bob Dornan in 1996. Now this Southern California House district is back in play, fueled by an anti-Democratic national tide and an impolitic remark Sanchez made in a Spanish-language television interview last month. Sanchez gave Republican rival Van Tran a political gift when she warned on Univision that Vietnamese and Republicans were trying to seize power from "us" -- the implication being Hispanics and her. Tran, a state assemblyman, is using the interview to ...

Study: US Hispanics Outlive Whites by 2 Years, Blacks by 7

Study: US Hispanics Outlive Whites by 2 Years, Blacks by 7

(Oct. 14) -- Hispanics living in the United States outlive both black and white Americans, according to a new government study. Life expectancy for Hispanics in the U.S. is seven years longer than it is for blacks, and two years longer than it is for whites, the report shows. In other words, a child born of Hispanic origin in 2006 can expect to live to about 80; a black child born the same year can expect to live to about 73 and a white child to 78. The study is the first of its kind to evaluate the life expectancy of Hispanics nationally, and researchers say it further confounds their ...

Opinion: Look What's Missing From Daytime TV

Opinion: Look What's Missing From Daytime TV

(Sept. 17) -- Recent news from the world of daytime television has heralded some dramatic changes: the decline of soap operas. The remaking of talk shows from tabloid to respectable (so much so that President Barack Obama can drop by). The dusting off of old game shows -- "Let's Make a Deal," "The Price Is Right" -- with snazzier sets and hipper hosts. Yet from where I sit, the picture remains depressingly similar to the one I grew up watching. Despite just released Nielsen statistics that show 40 percent of new television homes will be Hispanic, among the casts of the many daytime talk shows ...

Obama's Immigration Speech: Big Words and Passion, but What's New?

Obama's Immigration Speech: Big Words and Passion, but What's New?

President Barack Obama's impassioned appeal for comprehensive immigration reform on Thursday recast familiar themes and objectives, slammed Republican opponents, and sought to bring the nation together on one of its most intractable political issues. Reaching out in every direction -- to immigrant history, to the Statue of Liberty and Emma Lazarus' stirring poetry -- Obama showed at times the fervor of his 2008 campaign speeches, calling immigration reform "a moral imperative," and demanding accountability and a common sense solution. But beneath the powerful rhetoric and genuine commitment, ...

Obama Immigration Speech: Policy or Politics?

Obama Immigration Speech: Policy or Politics?

On Thursday, President Obama is to take the stage at Washington, D.C.'s American University to make the case for comprehensive immigration reform. The issue has raised temperatures across the country, dividing those calling for tough border protection and rigid policing of illegal immigrants from those who favor less punitive measures and broader integration. Perhaps nowhere is this schism more evident than in Arizona, where Gov. Jan Brewer recently signed into law a controversial measure that gives law enforcement officials unprecedented authority to question anyone suspected of being in the ...
