DC Mayor Arrested for Protesting Budget Restrictions

WASHINGTON -- The budget deal lawmakers struck to avoid a government shutdown was greeted by some with relief, but it has one city already reeling: the capital itself. City officials say Washington was used as a pawn last week's budget bargaining, with new restrictions part of the price of a deal. Angry that Congress appears ready to take away autonomy granted to the city in the last several years, Mayor Vincent Gray and six Council members including the chairman were among 41 people arrested Monday outside the Capitol while protesting the changes that might be inevitable. Seven hours later, ...

Myanmar Struck by Earthquake; 5 Facts About the Former Burma

The impoverished Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, known as Burma under British rule, is somewhat off the beaten path in terms of American news consumption and rarely makes headlines. So when it was struck by a powerful earthquake today, AOL News thought it would take a moment to offer up a quick list of key facts about the resource-rich but harshly ruled nation. It was struck by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake today. There were no reports of deaths or major destruction in the country, but in Myanmar, where a repressive government restricts virtually every source of news, accurate information ...

Transplant Patient Got AIDS From New Kidney

ATLANTA -- A transplant patient contracted AIDS from the kidney of a living donor, in the first documented case of its kind in the U.S. since screening for HIV began in the mid-1980s. It turns out the donor had unprotected gay sex in the 11 weeks between the time he tested negative and the time the surgery took place in 2009. In a report Thursday on the New York City case, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that organ donors have repeat HIV tests a week before surgery. "The most sensitive test needs to be done as close as possible to the time of transplant," said Dr. ...

Gene Therapy Raises Hope for a Future AIDS Cure

Gene Therapy Raises Hope for a Future AIDS Cure

In a bold new approach ultimately aimed at trying to cure AIDS, scientists used genetic engineering in six patients to develop blood cells that are resistant to HIV, the virus that causes the disease. It's far too early to know if this scientific first will prove to be a cure, or even a new treatment. The research was only meant to show that, so far, it seems feasible and safe. The concept was based on the astonishing case of an AIDS patient who seems to be cured after getting blood cells from a donor with natural immunity to HIV nearly four years ago in Berlin. Researchers are seeking a ...

More Veterans Exposed to Infections at VA Facilities

More veterans may have been exposed to serious infections such as HIV and hepatitis at VA facilities because of inadequately cleaned equipment. The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 12 more veterans who may have received colonoscopies with unsanitary equipment at a VA hospital in in Miami, officials said. In 2009, VA officials there notified 2,400 war veterans who could have been exposed while undergoing the routine procedure at the hospital since 2004, according to The Miami Herald, which first reported the additional exposures. VA spokeswoman Mary Kay Hollingsworth said in a ...

Egypt, Deficit Bring Calls to End Foreign Aid -- But Should We?

WASHINGTON -- The unrelated crises roiling Egypt and the federal budget have at least one thing in common: They both have brought calls to eliminate foreign aid. Just as Punxsutawney Phil crawled from his hole this week, the perennial debate over sending taxpayer money to foreign lands emerged once more on Capitol Hill. In its effort to get a handle on the turmoil, the Obama administration raised the specter of ending military aid to Egypt. The second-largest recipient of U.S. largesse after Israel, Egypt has gotten more than $250 billion in weaponry since 1950, and that doesn't count the ...

Man to Row, Row, Row His Boat Across the Atlantic

The third time could be the charm for a New York City man trying to row across the Atlantic Ocean by himself. Victor Mooney, 45, a college publicist, will paddle west from the Cape Verde islands in February after two previous attempts to cross the Atlantic had to be abandoned. The trip is a mission to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS -- a disease that claimed the life of one his brothers. Another brother is infected. "I'm hoping that for every stroke I make, someone can get tested for the virus," Mooney said. South African Arts International, Ltd. Victor Mooney hopes his third ...

David Gutierrez, Discharged From Air Force, Gets 8 Years for Spreading HIV

A military court has sentenced U.S. Air Force Sgt. David Gutierrez to eight years in military prison for violating orders to use a condom and notify partners of his HIV-positive status. Gutierrez was also dishonorably discharged from the armed services, which means he will forfeit his wages and benefits. During the proceedings, Gutierrez had begged the sentencing judge to stop short of dishonorable discharge so he could keep his military health benefits, which pay for his expensive HIV medication. According to Gutierrez's wife, Gina Gutierrez, her husband contracted HIV in 2007 during a ...

Elders Enjoying More Sex but Risking More Disease

Elders Enjoying More Sex but Risking More Disease

A recent flurry of scientific reports should remove any lingering suspicion that older people automatically lose their sex drive the minute they hand in their retirement papers. That's the good news. The bad news is that too many of these turned-on elders are also contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, chlamydia and genital herpes. The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, based at the University of Indiana where Dr. Alfred Kinsey led the first large-scale studies of human sexual behavior more than 60 years ago, broke new ground by including the entire age spectrum ...
