Taylor Hall Injured in Fight [VIDEO]

Maybe Taylor Hall has learned his lesson. Hall, the Edmonton Oilers rookie star, got into his first fight as a pro on Thursday and injured his left ankle in the process, CBC reported. Hall was scheduled to have an MRI today and did not travel with the team for its next game. Considering that Hall leads the team in goals and assists, his absence will most certainly be felt. Video of the fight, promoted here by the aptly named site Hockey Fights, shows Hall twisting his ankle as he is pulled down by the Columbus Blue Jackets' Derek Dorsett. News of the latest NHL fighting injury comes a ...

Former NHL star Bob Probert died in June, and researchers have just determined that he suffered from a brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Probert, who was 45 when he died of heart failure, left his brain to science because he believed the head trauma he experienced on the ice had caused permanent damage. Turns out, he was right. Thanks to Probert and other athletes who have allowed scientists to study their brains after death, we're learning more about CTE and how it can be prevented. Here are five facts about this progressive, degenerative brain disease. 1. It ...

Hockey Team Answers $50,000-Shot Controversy With Charity [VIDEO]

Days after declaring a 73-year-old fan's $50,000 goal invalid, an amateur hockey team will donate part of that sum to charity. The Indiana Ice, who play in the USHL, offer one fan a shot at winning $50,000 at every Saturday home game. The fan stands behind the red end line and shoots. If the puck goes across the ice and into a small hole at the bottom of a board placed in front the net, the fan goes home 50-grand richer. As lifelong recreational puckster Dick Marsh prepared to take his shot Feb. 12, he announced his gift, should he win it, would be given to charity. Then he wowed the ...

Well, now the newlyweds are going into overtime planning a hockey-themed honeymoon. Last Thursday, die-hard hockey fanatics Cyndi and David Pritchard were married on the ice at Philips Arena in Atlanta during the first intermission of the Atlanta Thrashers versus Boston Bruins game. The Toughest Job on Any Field? Being the Mascot

The Toughest Job on Any Field? Being the Mascot

(Oct. 17) -- Think the odds are slim of ever playing on a pro sports team? Getting to be the mascot is even tougher. "There are only 125 positions available in the U.S.," said Erin Blank, a professional mascot who has worked for teams like the Detroit Tigers baseball team and the Washington Capitals hockey team. "You have a better chance of making an NFL team, an NBA team, a Major League Baseball team or an NHL team than being the mascot." That isn't stopping people from trying. For every Famous Chicken or Phillie Phanatic who hits the big time, there are hundreds of other hopefuls happy to ...

Fatal Meningitis Outbreak Linked to Hockey Game

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (June 23) -- Two hockey players have died and two other people are hospitalized from an outbreak of a particularly virulent strain of meningitis. Health officials said today they have traced the bacteria to a death in Denver in April. Officials are speculating that players at the end of a June 9 hockey game in Fort Collins removed their mouth guards, then shook hands, spreading the bacteria through saliva on their hands, said Jane Viste, a spokeswoman for the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment. Blackhawks Defeat Stanley Cup Drought, But Chicago Remains Cursed

Last night the Chicago Blackhawks claimed the Stanley Cup, the National Hockey League's top prize, in a stunning 4-3 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The victory was made sweeter by the fact that it demolishes the Hawks' 49-year-long Stanley Cup drought, which had been the longest in NHL history. The last time a Chicagoan got the opportunity to sip champagne out of Lord Stanley's Mug was back in 1961. What held the Blackhawks back for so long? Some, such as hockey writer Jason Kay, argue that its all a matter of statistics and probability -- that math proves why "13 teams other ...

Obama Owes Harper a 24 of Molson Beer After Losing Olympic Hockey Bet

VANCOUVER, B.C. - It seems U.S. President Barack Obama owes Prime Minister Stephen Harper a few cold ones. The two leaders had a friendly bet on the outcome of Sunday's gold-medal Olympic hockey game. Team Canada came out on top, so Obama will have to pick up a 24-pack of Molson Canadian for the prime minister. Harper would have had to buy Obama a case of Yuengling beer if the U.S. had taken the top honour at the tournament. Team USA beat Team Canada in the first match-up between the two countries in the preliminary rounds, but Canada came out on top in a heart-stopping overtime round on ...
