Naked Ambition: How PETA's Strategy of Nearly Nude Protesting Pays Off

The letters P-E-T-A stand for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals," but you're forgiven if you thought they stood for "Publicity Events involving T and A." After all, it seems every time there's a slow news day, PETA is there to take up the slack by doing a publicity campaign revolving around attractive and scantily clad people -- usually women. The most recent, which took place last month on "World Water Day," featured some of PETA's vegan vixens taking showers in public places to illustrate how much water is wasted in meat production. Lindsay Rajt, PETA's campaign department ...

Nazi Cake a Recipe for Trouble for Austrian Pastry Shop

Nazi Cake a Recipe for Trouble for Austrian Pastry Shop

An Austrian baker is pleading the same defense that many Nazis used at Nuremberg -- "I was just following orders" -- after baking a cake festooned with swastikas and a baby raising its right hand in a "Heil Hitler" salute. Bakery owner Manfred Klaschka says he made the cake -- at a cost of $128 -- at the request of a customer. "If it's requested, it's made," said Klaschka, according to MSNBC. "I don't want to be pulled into this because I'm a confectioner, and there's nothing more to it." Alamy A Nazi party suit pin depicting a black swastika on a red flag. An Austrian baker has ...

99-Year-Old Recalls Risking Life for Holocaust Survivors [VIDEO]

The "Today" show has previewed a documentary about a remarkable woman who told the world the harrowing story of a group of Holocaust survivors fleeing Europe. Jewish-American photojournalist Ruth Gruber was 36 and working for the New York Herald Tribune in 1947 when she was sent to document the plight of 4,500 refugees aboard the Exodus, which was bombed by British ships enforcing a blockade. The Jewish passengers on the Exodus -- all of whom had escaped death camps -- would have been sent back to Germany if not for Gruber's photos, which spread around the world. Visit msnbc.com for ...

John Galliano, Anti-Semitism, and the Power of Words

John Galliano, Anti-Semitism, and the Power of Words

In just days, one of the greatest names in modern fashion has seen his reputation scrambled, from cheeky enfant terrible to accused bigot. Last Thursday night, John Galliano, Christian Dior's star designer, was drinking at the Paris watering hole and fashionista favorite La Perle, when he allegedly tore into a 35-year-old gallery owner named Geraldine Bloch. He's accused of calling her an "ugly Jew face" with bad eyebrows and cheap boots and threatening her friend with equally noxious epithets (the friend, apparently, is Asian). At first, Galliano was simply suspended from the House of Dior, ...

Railroad to Hell: France's SNCF Expresses 'Sorrow,' 'Regret' for Holocaust Role

Sixty-six years ago yesterday -- a lifetime ago -- Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. January 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked by ceremonies across Europe, speeches from leaders, acknowledgment from government officials; ambassadors in Washington, D.C., sometimes visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on this date. Sixty-six years and yet the wounds can feel terribly fresh. Take the case of the French national railway company, SNCF -- Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français. During the years of Nazi occupation, SNCF shuttled some 76,000 Jews to the Franco-German ...

On Holocaust Memorial Day, Hitler and Nazi Metaphors as Prevalent as Ever

On Holocaust Memorial Day, Hitler and Nazi Metaphors as Prevalent as Ever

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this date in 1945 Soviet troops liberated survivors at the Auschwitz concentration camp, and in 2005 the United Nations designated Jan. 27 as a day to commemorate victims of the Nazi era. To mark the anniversary, the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., plans to hold a candle-lighting ceremony in its Hall of Remembrance. Holocaust memorial events were scheduled for the U.N. building in New York but have been postponed because of the snowstorm. Although many people take this somber occasion to honor the memory of lost ancestors ...

Rabbis Want Glenn Beck, Roger Ailes to Stop Fox News' Holocaust Comparisons

Rabbis Want Glenn Beck, Roger Ailes to Stop Fox News' Holocaust Comparisons

A coalition of some 400 rabbis has published an open letter to Fox News Channel owner Rupert Murdoch, calling on the media mogul to discipline Roger Ailes, president of Fox News, and Glenn Beck, the cable channel's incendiary and popular host, for exploiting the Holocaust in their comments. In particular they were upset over Beck's attacks on liberal magnate George Soros and Jewish leaders. "We share a belief that the Holocaust, of course, can and should be discussed appropriately in the media," the rabbis write in the letter, which appears Thursday as an advertisement in The Wall Street ...

Holocaust Survivors: France's Train Company Owes Us 'Blood Money'

NICE, France -- Some survivors of the French trains used to deport 76,000 Jews to the death camps during World War II are angry about what was billed this week as the first public apology to them by the SNCF, France's national railway company. They believe that SNCF President Guillaume Pepy did not take true responsibility for the train company's role in Jewish deportations when he spoke at a ceremony Tuesday. Jewish Group Wants Glenn Beck Dropped From Fox News

Jewish Funds for Justice (JFSJ), a charity that campaigns for social change, delivered a petition with 10,000 signatures to Fox News Thursday demanding that talk show host Glenn Beck get the pink slip. The petition drive began in November after Fox News aired a three-part Beck special on businessman and philanthropist George Soros called "Puppet Master." The television show was deemed anti-Semitic by many in the media and Jewish groups. Beck once said that his election coverage goal was to "make George Soros cry," which is "hard to do," as Soros "saw people into gas chambers." Beck's ...

Germany Knew Eichmann's Hiding Place Years Before Capture

Germany Knew Eichmann's Hiding Place Years Before Capture

After 15 years on the run, justice finally caught up with Adolf Eichmann on May 11, 1960. The Nazi war criminal -- who organized the deportation of millions of Jews to death camps in German-occupied Poland -- was kidnapped outside his Buenos Aires home by Mossad agents and brought to trial in Israel. He was found guilty of crimes against humanity and hanged in 1962. But Eichmann's capture needn't have been so long in the making. German newspaper Bild this weekend published a secret service document that revealed West German intelligence officials knew about his Argentine hideout as early as ...
