WASHINGTON -- Insiders at the Homeland Security Department warned for months that senior Obama administration appointees were improperly delaying the releases of government files on politically sensitive topics as sought by citizens, journalists and watchdog groups under the Freedom of Information Act, according to uncensored emails newly obtained by The Associated Press. The highly unusual political vetting was described as "meddling," "crazy" and "bananas!" It is the subject of a congressional hearing later this week and an ongoing inquiry by the department's inspector general. Concerns ...
In the middle of Sunshine Week promoting transparency in government, open-government advocates say the apparent demotion of a high-level Department of Homeland Security employee for whistle-blowing is particularly dark. "Our government is sending the message to federal workers that they do not want them to come forward and report these problems," Dave Colapinto, the general counsel of the National Whisteblowers Center, told AOL News today by phone. "In other words, they do not want the public to know what is going on." According to The Associated Press, the Department of Homeland Security ...
WASHINGTON -- The Homeland Security Department demoted a senior career employee who confidentially complained to the inspector general that political appointees were improperly interfering with requests for federal records by journalists and watchdog groups. The new Republican chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee investigating those practices told the Obama administration that the decision "appeared to be an act of retaliation" and warned, "Obstructing a congressional investigation is a crime." The department responded that it had done nothing ...
In the last month and half, the Muslim world has been re-imagined in Western minds. On our television screens, at least before the upheaval in Libya, we saw women on the streets of Cairo, peaceful demonstrations, dictators overthrown. It was a different Islamic world than the one we'd been shown before, one that craves democracy, privileges peace; it was a counterpoint to Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations," and it provided a recognition of shared values, shared hopes. The world we saw is imperfect, to be sure. Women are struggling to be equal partners in that peaceful revolution. ...

WASHINGTON (Dec. 16) -- Counterterrorism officials are tracking threats to the U.S. and Europe from al-Qaida and affiliated groups during the holiday season, authorities said. They have not yet seen evidence of specific plots aimed at the U.S. The FBI and Homeland Security Department have alerted state and local law enforcement to be wary of suspicious behavior and to regularly change security measures to interfere with any terrorist plans. The warning was sent in a bulletin Wednesday, obtained by The Associated Press. It did not include information about specific plots or intelligence. On ...
(Dec. 16) -- It might be time to dust off your old fallout shelter, if you have one. Federal officials and disaster experts are telling people the best place to be in case of a terrorist-style nuclear attack might be your own home. "The government has a surprising new message," The New York Times reports. "Do not flee." In fact, there is little new about this advice: It's what officials have been saying for several years now. (Dec. 15) -- Authorities continue to search today for a fifth suspect in the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, who was shot during a gun fight late Tuesday night. Terry, 40, and a team of agents were in a remote part of the desert last night trying to track down a group of thieves who were believed to have been stealing from illegal immigrants. Just after 11 p.m., the agents encountered the men in an area north of Nogales, Ariz., known as Peck Canyon, and Terry was killed in the ensuing gunfight. Four of the five men involved in his death have been captured, and the fifth is still on ...
