Last week, Salt Lake City launched an innovative program in an effort to address the needs of the city's homeless population. Now people can support the homeless by putting their spare change into shiny, red parking meters that will be installed throughout the city. The program, dubbed the Homeless Outreach Service Team, or HOST, was created in response to the many homeless panhandlers in Salt Lake. Proceeds collected from the meters will go to the Pamela J. Atkinson Foundation, which will distribute the funds to the city's homeless service providers. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says ...
A series of videos that allegedly feature scantily clad women beating up homeless men in Florida has led to an investigation by local law enforcement and a lawsuit filed by the Southern Legal Counsel on behalf of the transient men. "We are investigating it," St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz told told AOL News. "Because it is an open investigation we can't comment a great deal ... but clearly they have videos of people being beaten up." According to Puetz, the videos are being offered for purchase on the website Shefights.net. An introductory message on the site's home page states ...

A homeless man panhandling in Pontiac, Mich., received more than just some spare change last week. Michael Secaur was standing on a corner Feb. 21 when a woman pulled up in her car and gave him some change. When Secaur looked closer at the change in his hand, he noticed he was also holding a gold ring with diamonds. Secaur initially considered taking the ring to a pawnshop but changed his mind. "I figured whoever owned it -- it looks like it's part of a wedding set," Secaur told The Oakland Press. "It's probably worth more to the woman who had it, so I'm going to try and get it back ...
For every homeless person like Ted Williams, who rises to sudden celebrity, there is a Debbie Clark, who has experienced the heights of fame only to lose everything except her dignity. From 1991 to 1993, Clark, using the name "Storm," was one of the stars of the hit syndicated series "American Gladiators," a TV competition show that matched amateur athletes against the show's own elite team of "gladiators" with names like "Zap," "Tower" and "Laser." As "Storm," Clark participated in events like the "Assault," where contenders had 60 seconds to make it through an arena-sized obstacle course, ...
Is "American Idol" alum Alex Lambert homeless? That's what he claimed in a series of tweets that prompted concern among his fans. But a spokesperson for 19 Entertainment, the production company that manages many former "Idol" contestants, denied the story and pointed out that Lambert receives a monthly retainer and has been working in the studio. "He's not homeless," the rep said. "I don't know where that came from." The saga began Tuesday night when Lambert said he was "going to freak out if I don't tell y'all the truth," then tweeted this: .bbpBox27242759979008000 ...
For many people, the tale of how homeless guy Ted Williams was discovered and given a chance to enjoy fame and fortune has been inspirational. One person who was inspired was actress Vicki Lawrence, who found Williams' saga the perfect opportunity for satire using her famous "Mama" character that she introduced nearly 40 years ago on "The Carol Burnett Show." Lawrence, 61, recently filmed a video dressed as "Mama" and declaring herself to be homeless because she sees it as a career move -- and she provided an early glimpse of this effort in a special preview for AOL News. "I have ...
Ted Williams became a voice for homeless adults after he was discovered in early January, but a group of current and former homeless teens in San Diego is giving them a beat -- in the form of a steel drum band called the Steel Monarchs. The troupe has been around since 1999 and is part of an after-school program offered at the Monarch School, a K-12 public school established exclusively for homeless youth. It's one of only three schools in the nation specifically established for homeless students and the only public school of its kind with a nonprofit partnership to supplement students' ...
